ISRO to Hire 1,000+ New Employees as India Tightens Resignation Rules for Mission Scientists

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will recruit more than 1,000 new employees to strengthen its workforce as the government sets up strict rules for scientists who quit on the country’s most vital space operations.

We’ve seen more than 100 scientists leave ISRO in the past few years, and we have to consider maintaining the experienced people working in strategic national programmes. In order to address this challenge, the Department of Space has developed new guidelines to ensure continuity in high-priority missions.

With the new rules, senior scientists and technical experts on high-priority projects like Gaganyaan, India’s first human spaceflight mission, would no longer be able to resign or take voluntary retirement without prior approval from the Department of Space. This is to avoid the impact on the project management of big projects if experienced people are to leave the team because it is a major project they were working on.

The government officials say it is important to retain very skilled scientists in the field of space development as India expands its space capabilities. ISRO is currently working on a number of high-profile missions in the space sector like Gaganyaan programme, next-generation launch vehicles, advanced satellite systems, planetary exploration activities, and commercial space activities.

Besides the tighter resignation norms, ISRO is also investing in the talent pool. To strengthen leadership and enhance career progression opportunities for the organisation, more than 1,000 new employees are to be brought in to scientific, engineering, and technical roles across the organisation. 460 senior positions will also be created to strengthen leadership and to enable career progression within the organisation.

The growth is the manifestation of ISRO’s growing role in the Indian space programme as its space programme is evolving. In an era where the demand for satellites, deep-space exploration, defence-related space exploration and cooperation in the space sector is growing and international collaborations are increasing, ISRO needs to have a large and experienced workforce to face future challenges.

The new policy is not to divide employees, but to make sure that strategically important missions are carried out without interruption in the loss of key personnel, and the creation of new senior positions and fresh recruitment will ensure longer-term employee retention which will lead to more career opportunities and professional development.

Specialised space scientists require years of training and mission-specific expertise, and replacing them is time-consuming and expensive, industry experts say. The government must balance tighter retention with increased hiring to maintain institutional knowledge and bring in young talent into India’s rapidly evolving space ecosystem.

As the organisation prepares for future missions like Chandrayaan-3, Aditya-L1, and other successful satellite launch programmes, ISRO has been recognized globally for successful missions. With such future missions like Gaganyaan and more ambitious missions to come, the need to continue to build a stable and highly skilled workforce has become a strategic priority.

The new measures are also a step towards the government’s focus on making India a space superpower. With more than 1,000 new hires and hundreds of new leadership roles and tighter controls on mission-critical talent, ISRO is well positioned for the next phase of India’s future as a world-leading space power.
