The rumors that pensions of certain categories of central government retirees could be stopped or excluded from revision under the 8th Pay Commission have been dismissed by Shiva Gopal Mishra, general secretary of the Staff Side of the National Council (Joint Consultative Machinery), or NC-JCM.
The clarification comes after several messages started appearing on social media, in Mishra’s name, and it is claimed that pension payments for some retirees could be discontinued. Some of the messages also claimed that only pension recipients who retire after 2026 would not be eligible for pension benefits in the future or pension revision in the upcoming Pay Commission.
In a video message posted on X on Saturday, Mishra addressed the pensioners' concerns and categorically dismissed the claims. He said several pensioners had contacted him after seeing the messages and sought clarification about their pension entitlements.
Mishra said pension revision is currently being dealt with by the Pay Commission. Pensioners, irrespective of when they retire, would continue to receive their pensions and there would be scope to improve their benefits, he said.
He also warned pensioners not to rely on unsolicited messages that were spread through unofficial channels. Mishra noted that there is very limited means to prevent various channels from circulating false information and pensioners need to verify the validity of such claims before accepting or forwarding them.
Mishra, who is also the general secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF), advised pensioners to rely on information issued through official union platforms for updates on the 8th Pay Commission and pension-related matters.
Central government employees and retirees will receive some help from the 8th Central Pay Commission which will shape salaries, pensions and other benefits. The commission will be headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai and will make recommendations within 18 months of its constitution.
The Commission’s scope is the adjustment of pay and pension-related benefits for a large portion of the central government workforce. The issue is now being closely watched by employees as well as pensioners and family pensioners.
The NC-JCM Staff Side has already been pressing for pensioners to get clear and explicit consideration under the new Pay Commission. In a memorandum sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2025, the staff side asked for amendments to the Commission's Terms of Reference.
One of its primary demands was that existing pensioners and family pensioners be included in pension revision. The staff also asked for a specific direction by which the Commission shall recommend an appropriate implementation date for revised pension benefits.
In the months since then, the organisation has continued raising these issues in discussions with the Pay Commission. Besides pension revision, employee representatives have also been raising demands on the fitment factor, allowances and other components of the overall pay structure.
For pensioners, the latest clarification provides reassurance that there is currently no basis for the social media claims that pension payments will simply stop for retirees based on their retirement year.
The final structure of pension revisions, quantum of increase, implementation date and other conditions will depend on the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission and subsequent government decisions.
Until official recommendations are made public, pensioners are advised not to rely on unverified social media messages, and to follow government and employee-union-led communication channels for advice and announcements from official government and employee-union channels.
Pension debate is expected to be an aspect of the 8th Pay Commission conversation, and the labour and pensioner organisations will continue to push for revisions that would cater to the financial needs of both those serving and retirees.
