SpaceX Gets Fresh Bullish Call From Oppenheimer as Price Target Climbs to $280

Oppenheimer has raised its SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) price target to $280 from $250, maintaining its Outperform rating on the stock. More bullish thoughts are expected from Wall Street now that SpaceX is expanding into space, satellite connectivity, and artificial intelligence.

The new $280 target is $30, or 12%, higher than Oppenheimer’s previous $250 target. The brokerage had previously raised its goal to $250 from $190 in June, citing more visibility into SpaceX's growth prospects after its acquisition of AI coding company Cursor.

Oppenheimer’s bullish thesis revolves around SpaceX’s growing technology portfolio. The company is no longer seen as a rocket-launch business. The Starlink satellite-internet operation, launch infrastructure, and artificial intelligence ambitions are now much more salient components of the long-term investment story.

The AI opportunity has been one of the key reasons behind the elevated expectations. Oppenheimer has argued that SpaceX could control multiple layers of the AI stack—compute, model, data, and applications. The Cursor acquisition has reinforced that perspective by providing SpaceX with AI technology, engineering skills, training data, and an enormous user base.

SpaceX’s Starlink business is another major pillar of the company’s growth strategy. Analysts consider satellite connectivity to be an enormous market, and in this context, the direct-to-device and mobile connectivity opportunities are expanding. Oppenheimer also has discussed the possibility that Starlink’s mobile business could be much larger than the satellite-internet business at present.

The company's launch business is still a major competitive advantage. SpaceX’s reusable rocket technology and Starship development program provide what analysts describe as a long-term moat. Oppenheimer has specifically pointed out Starship's potential for lunar missions and SpaceX's overall launch capabilities.

The recent target increase comes as Wall Street shares are on the up. Morgan Stanley recently kept an Overweight rating with a $300 price target and said SpaceX's planned expansion of its Starbase launch facility could unlock substantial additional capacity across its space, connectivity, and AI businesses.

But investors should also keep in mind that expectations for SpaceX are extremely high. The stock has been volatile since its IPO, and analysts are divided as to how rapidly the company’s big AI and space-related investments will translate into revenue and profits. The valuation of the company’s aggressive growth plans has come under heavy scrutiny recently with coverage of the large potential and the valuation risks.

At the current market price of around $142.23, Oppenheimer’s $280 target would imply around 97% potential upside. The target is thus much more bullish than the stock's current valuation, though price targets are analyst estimates and are not a guarantee that it will perform well in the future.

For investors, the question is how SpaceX will convert its enormous technological potential into sustainable commercial growth. With Starlink scaling, launch capabilities increasing, and AI becoming an increasingly important part of the company's strategy, Wall Street still sees a lot of long-term optionality.

Oppenheimer’s decision to raise its target to $280 signals that the firm believes those opportunities are becoming more valuable. SpaceX will have to do a lot to reach that goal: whether it will succeed in its core space business and what it is doing with AI and connectivity.
