India's digital payments ecosystem continued to grow in August 2026, and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reached a landmark. UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions in that month, the first time monthly transaction volumes have crossed the 24-billion mark.

According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the number of transactions in August was 3.6% higher than the 23.66 billion transactions in July 2026. This growth was even larger than that in July last year.
On a year-on-year basis, UPI transaction volumes have increased by nearly 22%, from 20.01 billion transactions in August 2025 to 24.51 billion in August 2026. The latest numbers underscore the continued trend of digital payments in India.
Average Daily UPI Transactions Are Up to Record High
The increase in monthly transactions was also reflected in the average daily transaction count. UPI processed approximately 790.6 million transactions per day in August, compared to 763.2 million per day in July.
The figure is a major rise from August 2025 when the average daily transaction count was around 645.5 million. That means UPI handled roughly 145 million new transactions per day compared with the same month a year ago.
Such a sustained rise indicates that digital payments have become more and more integrated in everyday transactions, retail purchases, bill payments, money transfers and other routine financial activities.
Transaction value remains around Rs 30 Lakh Crore
Although transaction volumes struck a new record, the total value that was processed through UPI in the month has seen a minor month-on-month decrease.
UPI transactions were worth around Rs.29.82 lakh crore for August 2026 compared with Rs.29.88 lakh crore in July. That is a slight decline of about 0.2%.
But the year-on-year picture remained positive. The total transaction value was up about 20% from Rs 24.85 lakh crore in August 2025.
The difference between volume growth and value growth indicates that more transactions are being done without a corresponding increase in the average transaction size.
Average daily transaction value marginally lower
The average daily value of UPI transactions also moderated slightly in August. It was about Rs 96,194 crore per day, compared with Rs 96,383 crore in July.
Despite the slight decrease from the previous month, the overall value processed through the system remains close to the Rs 1 lakh crore daily mark, highlighting the scale at which UPI now operates.
The high transaction volume combined with relatively stable average transaction values points to continued growth in the frequency of digital payments across the country.
UPI helps build India's Digital Payments Ecosystem
The new NPCI figures show the increasing role of UPI in India's payments infrastructure. From the most basic low-value transactions to larger transfers, the platform is now an important part of the country's digital financial ecosystem.
The August figures are particularly significant because transaction volumes crossed 24 billion in one month for the first time. The 22% year-on-year increase also demonstrates that UPI's growth momentum remains strong despite the already high level of adoption.
As digital payment usage continues to grow, the new numbers only underscore UPI’s position as one of the primary drivers of India’s shift towards faster and more convenient electronic payments.
With transaction volumes hitting a new high and daily usage increasing, the growth of digital payments in India, the August 2026 data, is another significant step for India in digital payments.
