India to Slash Import Duty on Eligible UK-Made Cars to 10% Under New Trade Agreement from July 15

India is also going to reduce import duties on eligible UK-manufactured automobiles to take advantage of the newly ratified India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and will be allowed to sell to UK car-makers at low customs duty as low as 10% from the current import duty of around 110% under the agreement beginning July 15. It is a crucial step towards further cementing trade ties between India and the UK and will benefit both automobile manufacturers and the Indian consumers.

The tariff reduction is part of the overall India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement to enhance bilateral trade, enhance access to markets and encourage investment in our economy. While India has previously imposed high import duties on all vehicles made in the UK and to protect its domestic automobile industry, the new agreement allows only concessional duties on UK-built vehicles.

The new 10% duty will apply only to vehicles that are imported under the agreed annual quota. After that, standard import duties will remain in place. It is a quota-based scheme that balances opening up India's premium automobile market and protecting the interest of domestic manufacturers.

The lower tariffs will also make a number of high-quality British car brands affordable to Indian buyers. Luxury cars imported from the UK will be able to sell for a very small price and the prices will depend on the car (production, specifications, taxes). Industry experts believe that the move will benefit the consumer looking for high-end imported vehicles and will increase competition in the Indian luxury car market.

Automobile manufacturers and dealers also welcomed the decision, saying it will enhance access to higher-end global brands and will improve trade between India and the UK. It will also motivate British automakers to expand their presence in the Indian market by providing a wider range of vehicles under the concessional import quota.

For India, the agreement is another step towards the integration into global supply chains while safeguarding domestic production. The government has highlighted that the reduced duty will only apply to UK-produced vehicles that meet the rules of origin in the trade agreement. This is so that only genuine UK-made vehicles get the tariff benefits and therefore no abuse of the concessional scheme.

The India–UK FTA will be of long-term economic value to us not only in terms of the automobile industry but also in terms of the whole country of India and the UK and there are a lot of new business opportunities in both countries as far as textiles, pharmaceuticals, food products, financial services, and technology are concerned. Low tariffs and more streamlined trade will help in bilateral business and investment across borders.

While the immediate impact will be seen in the premium automobile segment, experts say that consumers should wait for official pricing announcements from manufacturers and dealerships. The final on-road prices will still depend on GST, registration charges, insurance, logistics costs, and state-level taxes in addition to the revised customs duty.

With the introduction of the new import duty regime from July 15, the India–UK trade partnership has entered a new phase. The reduction in tariffs on eligible UK-made cars is in line with the growing economic cooperation between the two countries and will give Indian consumers more options and would make for a good trade deal.
