SpaceX Stock Crashes 16%; Elon Musk’s Wealth Falls by $152 Billion

On June 22, 2026, SpaceX experienced a sharp downturn with shares diving 16 percent, erasing nearly $600 billion in market value. The sharp fall has unnerved investors and had a profound effect on Elon Musk’s wealth - $152 billion in a single day. Musk is still the first trillionaire in the world for a reason - his wealth is much poorer.

The stock crash followed a three-day losing streak after SpaceX’s record-setting IPO in June. The company’s market capitalization fell from above $2.99 trillion to $2.036 trillion, with shares closing at $154.60 on Nasdaq. This puts SpaceX out of the top five global companies by valuation, behind tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft.

Musk’s own wealth took a huge hit thanks to SpaceX and even more so because he owns roughly 38 percent of the company, or 4.8 billion shares and 350 million stock options. Musk’s net worth dropped from $1.45 trillion to less than $1.1 trillion. While he is still the richest person in the world, the drop shows the volatility of a lot of IPOs and concentrated ownership.

Several factors led to the drop in shares. SpaceX announced that it would issue senior unsecured notes to refinance a $20 billion bridge loan associated with Musk’s AI startup xAI. Debt management raised concerns. Only 4% of SpaceX shares are currently trading in the market, creating very high volatility. The ESG ratings are also very important, and MSCI rated SpaceX with a CCC sustainability score, citing environmental and governance risks. The company reported a $4.9 billion net loss in 2025 and another $4.28 billion loss in the first quarter of 2026, adding to investor anxiety.

The broader effects of this crash are massive. Investors who rushed to buy shares during the IPO rally have seen most of their gains erased. SpaceX’s long-term prospects in space exploration and AI partnerships are strong; however, short-term instability is likely to persist. The episode shows the dangers of investing in companies with few shares on the market and ambitious but expensive projects.

And the 16 percent drop in SpaceX stock has not only made Elon Musk’s wealth evaporate, but also raised questions about the sustainability of the company’s rapid growth. Musk is a trillionaire, and SpaceX still has a lot of cash in the bank, but the selloff demonstrates how innovation, debt, and investor faith in the future of one of the world’s most ambitious companies cannot be ignored.
