Trump Announces $100 Billion TSMC Investment in US, Total Planned Commitment Reaches $265 Billion

Former US President Donald Trump has highlighted a major investment commitment by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), saying the chipmaker will invest an additional $100 billion in semiconductor manufacturing and job creation in the United States. If fully realized, the company's total planned US investment would reach approximately $265 billion, making it one of the largest foreign manufacturing commitments in American history.

The announcement has reignited discussions over the United States' efforts to strengthen domestic semiconductor production and reduce reliance on overseas chip manufacturing. Advanced semiconductors are considered critical for industries ranging from artificial intelligence and smartphones to automobiles, defence, and high-performance computing.

Supporters of Trump have described the investment as a significant win for US manufacturing, arguing that it demonstrates the country's ability to attract large-scale foreign investment. Many have credited policies aimed at encouraging domestic production and expanding America's semiconductor industry.

TSMC has already been investing heavily in the United States through multiple fabrication plants and expansion projects. The company has announced several phases of investment over recent years, particularly in Arizona, where it is building advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

The additional investment is expected to support the construction of new manufacturing capacity, strengthen semiconductor supply chains, and increase the production of advanced chips within the United States. Industry experts believe such investments could help improve supply chain resilience following the global chip shortages experienced in recent years.

The semiconductor sector has become a strategic priority for the US government, with efforts spanning multiple administrations. Policies including incentives for domestic chip manufacturing have encouraged companies like TSMC and other major semiconductor firms to expand their presence in the country.

The reported $265 billion figure represents TSMC's broader planned investment commitments in the United States, although project timelines and implementation depend on regulatory approvals, construction progress, market conditions, and future business decisions.

The announcement has generated widespread discussion on social media, with supporters praising the scale of the investment while others have called for continued monitoring of project execution and long-term economic impact. Analysts note that such large manufacturing projects typically unfold over several years before their full economic benefits become visible.

If completed as planned, TSMC's expanded investment is expected to strengthen the United States' position in global semiconductor manufacturing, create thousands of high-skilled jobs, and contribute to the country's long-term technological competitiveness.
