West Bengal Govt Announces 20% DA Hike Effective October 1, 2026

The BJP-controlled West Bengal government has made Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees and pensioners a 20% increase in the budget. The increase will be effective from October 1, 2026 and is one of the highest DA revisions in recent years.

And this will benefit lakhs of people, employees and retirees across the state, who can certainly use this relief from rising inflation and living costs. The decision followed months of discussions and demands by employee unions that union leaders had been calling for DA rates at par with central government DA rates.

The hike is evidence of the government’s focus on fiscal expansion of the economy,” the officials said. The new DA will be added to salaries and pensions starting October to improve household disposable income as the festive season approaches. And it can also boost local consumption in cities like Kolkata, Howrah and Siliguri, economists say.

The decision is also political in nature, too. As the BJP consolidates its control of West Bengal, the DA hike is seen in the context of a bid to strengthen the relationship with state employees who are a significant part of the electorate. The timing— just before Durga Puja also adds to the effect, making sure families feel the benefit during one of the state’s biggest festivals.

Fiscal experts are concerned that the hike will increase the state’s spending. Estimates suggest that the additional expenditure could reach into several thousand crores per annum. The government has said it will control the cost and budget adjustments are being made for that but it will be a financial problem for them to deal with.

Employee unions have welcomed the move as a “long overdue correction” that recognizes the rising cost of living. Pensioners are also relieved that the hike will allow them to deal with medical and household expenses.

Finally, the 20% DA hike effective October 1 is a game-changing economic and political moment for West Bengal. Although it reduces financial pressure on employees and pensioners, it also suggests the BJP government’s desire to provide welfare measures that people like.
