The Ministry of Railways has approved the recruitment of 4,098 technical personnel in various railway zones across India as part of a major initiative to improve operational safety and efficiency of the country's large railway network. This will allow filling up critical technical positions currently unfilled in the railway sector, so train service will be safe and reliable.
According to the Railway Ministry, the recruitment drive will cover 35 technical positions including some directly related to railway safety and infrastructure maintenance. Junior engineers, depot material superintendents, chemical and metallurgical assistants, and other technical staff responsible for maintaining railway assets and uninterrupted operations are to be included in the list.
The ministry has made this decision after taking into account vacancies reported to them through HRMS, which are also reported by railway zones. Based on the review, all railway zones have been instructed to start the recruitment process and to carry out the necessary administrative processes before forwarding the final vacancy details to the RRBs.
Among the vacancies, the Permanent Way department has the highest number of vacancies (845 posts), followed by 470 in Works and 450 in Carriage and Wagon. These departments are considered important to track maintenance, infrastructure development, and the smooth functioning of railway services in the country.
The Railway Ministry has also finalized the recruitment timeline in consultation with the Chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), Bengaluru. As per the schedule, the Centralised Employment Notification (CEN) for these posts will be issued by the nodal RRBs from July 21, 2026. Railway zones have been advised to comply with reservation norms for SC, ST, OBC, and EWS categories before uploading the final vacancy details.
The latest recruitment follows an earlier notification for 6,565 technician posts, which included 323 Signal Technician Grade-I positions and 6,242 Technician Grade-III. Taken as a whole, the hiring efforts are indicative of the government's continued commitment to address manpower shortages in safety-critical departments.
Union employees in railways have welcomed the decision and said that filling technical positions will alleviate the burden on the current staff and improve the overall operation and passenger safety of the railway system. Union representatives have long pointed out the need to recruit high-quality people for safety-related jobs in the Indian Railways system with new tracks, stations, and modern signalling systems.
The approval of 4,098 technical hires is another major step in the Railway Ministry’s wider modernization and safety agenda. A solid technical workforce is key to the safe, efficient, and reliable movement of millions of passengers and freight services every day in Indian Railways.
