Why Adani is not on the list

One interesting point about the 2026 Hurun ranking is the treatment of the Adani Group.

Hurun classifies the Adani enterprise as a first-generation business, not a legacy family business. It does not appear in the list of established family businesses. This distinction is important because the list is designed to measure family enterprises with a multigenerational ownership or legacy structure.

India's Family Business Power

The total ₹138 lakh crore value of India's top 300 family businesses illustrates the huge economic impact of family-owned businesses. The 2026 report also indicates a shift towards heavy industry, engineering and manufacturing, which resulted in higher value creation than technology, real estate and consumer businesses during the period studied.

From Reliance and Birla to Jindal, Bajaj and Mahindra, these business families demonstrate how Indian enterprises have evolved from traditional family ventures into some of the country's largest corporate groups.
