Astrotalk, the Noida-based astrology and spiritual-tech platform, has entered India’s unicorn club with a valuation of about $1 billion (around ₹9,541 crore). The company did so through an ESOP-led share buyback with more than 100 employees, rather than a venture capital funding round.

That makes Astrotalk one of India’s latest private-sector startups to cross the $1 billion valuation mark, the threshold for unicorn status which is a common mark of success.
ESOP Buyback brings Astrotalk to $1 Billion.
Astrotalk’s latest valuation was set up through a buyback of employee stock options. More than 100 employees were involved in that transaction, allowing eligible team members to convert part of their equity into liquidity, the report said. The company’s internal accruals funded that buyback.
Unlike traditional funding rounds, the transaction did not have to involve fresh capital from an institutional investor. It was just to provide liquidity for employees and to set a new valuation for the company.
Nearly Fourfold Jump in Valuation
The latest valuation is significantly higher than Astrotalk's previous valuation.
The company was worth around ₹2,400 crore in June 2024. At around ₹9,541 crore now, its valuation has increased nearly four times in about two years.
The dramatic increase shows the growth of India's consumer internet and digital services businesses— particularly platforms that have built huge user bases around specialised services.
From Astrology Platform to Unicorn
Astrotalk is a digital marketplace for the use of astrologers and spiritual consultants with online consultation services and related services. The model is based on traditional astrology and a technology-enabled market, offering services online.
The company's success is remarkable as astrology has historically been an offline and very fragmented industry. Astrotalk has tried to organise the sector through technology, payments, digital discovery and online consultations.
And its unicorn moment also illustrates how Indian startups are finding huge markets beyond fintech, e-commerce and software.
What the Unicorn status means?
Reaching a $1 billion valuation allows Astrotalk to be more visible to investors, employees and the rest of the startup world. The ESOP buyback for employees is also critical to the company for them in that they can realise a little value from their equity holdings before an IPO or any other liquidity event.
A private-company valuation is not the same as a publicly traded market capitalisation. Astrotalk is still privately held, and the $1 billion valuation is the price of the private transaction.
With the company now in the next phase of growth, to get more users and to prove whether the company’s business can justify valuation over time.
Astrotalk’s rise in India’s startup ecosystem is another example of how consumer-focused digital platforms can run big businesses by marrying technology with existing offline markets.
And now with around $1 billion valuation, Astrotalk has officially joined India's unicorn club, and the astrology platform is one of the country’s new billion-dollar private startups.
