India's wealth landscape is still dominated by long-established business families and the Hurun India Rich List 2026 points to an interesting trend: a handful of surnames dominate the country’s richest families. From diversified conglomerates and pharmaceuticals to retail, finance, infrastructure and manufacturing, these family names have developed businesses that have been run for generations and contribute deeply to India’s economy.

According to the Hurun India Rich List 2026, the top 10 surnames among India's wealthiest families are:
Agarwal, Gupta, Patel, Jain, Mehta, Goenka, Shah, Singh, Rao, Doshi.
The Agarwal and Gupta surnames are the top two and the Hurun list has the highest number of wealthy families. These families have started and operated successful businesses in metals, infrastructure, retail, technology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and finance, and are still here.
The Patel surname is third, with many of the prominent business families in the top 3 of the list having interests in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, real estate, and manufacturing. Jain families are following closely behind with successful industrial manufacturing, renewable energy, engineering, and diversified business interests across a range of other industries.
Mehta, Goenka and Shah surnames still play a key role in India's corporate ecosystem. These families are associated with businesses in healthcare, consumer goods, infrastructure, financial services, logistics and industrial manufacturing.
To complete the top 10 are the Singh, Rao, and Doshi surnames. While fewer families with such surnames appear on the list, they represent significant wealth from real estate, pharmaceuticals, technology, infrastructure, and diversified investment.
The rankings indicate that India's wealth creation is still based on family-owned businesses over many generations. Many of these organizations have diversified beyond what was initially the sector of their business and into new business sectors in the digital sector, renewable energy fields, healthcare, financial services, and consumer goods.
Note that the Hurun ranking is based on the number of wealthy families with a particular surname, but not on the total wealth held by all those with a particular surname. Likewise, the fact that the surname is on the list does not mean that everyone with a surname on the list is rich, but simply highlights the surname most frequently seen among India's richest business families.
As the Indian economy keeps growing, the business families are expected to continue driving investment, employment, innovation, exports and philanthropy. The Hurun India Rich List is an annual snapshot of wealth distribution among India’s top entrepreneurs and family-run businesses as well as the current and future business environment and wealth generation.
