The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has several rules that protect bank customers and make banking services more transparent. Here are five important RBI rules every Indian should know:

1. Banks Cannot Charge You for Every ATM Transaction.
Banks offer a certain number of free ATM transactions every month, depending on the type of account, location and bank. Once the free limit is exhausted, charges may apply. Bank customers should check their bank's ATM fee structure.
2. You Can Report Unauthorised Transactions.
If you notice an unauthorised transaction on your bank account or card, report it to your bank immediately. RBI's customer protection framework provides some protection to customers in cases of unauthorised electronic banking transactions, particularly when the customer reports the incident promptly.
Never share your OTP, PIN, CVV or banking password with anyone.
3. Banks Cannot Charge Interest on Credit Card Interest.
RBI rules require credit card issuers to provide clear information about interest, fees and charges. If an outstanding balance is carried forward, customers must check their monthly statements very carefully: interest and applicable charges can greatly increase the amount payable.
4. Banks Must Provide a Mechanism to Lodge Complaints.
If you have a complaint against a bank or regulated financial institution, you should first contact the institution’s grievance-redressal mechanism. If the complaint is not resolved satisfactorily or you do not receive a response within the prescribed period, you may be able to approach the RBI Ombudsman under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
5. Banks Cannot Force Customers to Buy Unwanted Products.
Banks and financial companies have to follow rules of transparency and customer protection. If customers are forced into buying insurance, investment products or other products they don’t want, you’re not going to like it.
Why These RBI Rules Matter.
Knowing your banking rights can help you avoid unnecessary charges, identify fraud quickly and raise complaints effectively. All RBI regulations are updated from time to time, so customers should always verify the latest rules through official RBI or bank channels before taking action.
