IDBI Bank shares rose over 3 percent on news that the Government of India has received revised financial bids for the strategic sale of its stake in the lender. Investors are now optimistic on one of India's largest banking privatization schemes. Fairfax Financial Holdings and Emirates NBD have made new offers for a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank. The stake is 45.48% for the Government of India and LIC's 15.24% to be sold, and there will be changes in ownership if the deal is completed. The new bids are based on earlier ones that did not meet the government’s valuation expectations. Fairfax’s new offer is now closer to the Centre’s reserve price and will likely make the long-pending strategic disinvestment process come to fruition, say the sources. The government is planning to get around ₹50,000 crore in the deal. Investor sentiment was positive after the reports and drove IDBI Bank shares higher. Market participants felt that the new bids signalled the privatization process, which has been delayed for years on valuation reasons, is moving again. The strategic sale of IDBI Bank has been on the table since 2022 as part of an overall disinvestment programme by the government. Reports in early this year have indicated that the initial bids were below the reserve price, and doubt remains on when the transaction will ultimately be completed. A government panel has recently reviewed the revised bids, and a final decision regarding the successful bidder is expected in the next month, reports also indicate. The Finance Ministry, IDBI Bank, LIC, Fairfax Financial, and Emirates NBD have not yet commented on the recent developments. If completed, it will be one of the biggest privatization transactions in India's banking sector. The sale could help the bank with operational flexibility, governance, and possibly generate long-term value for the bank and have a positive impact on the government’s asset monetization strategy. Investors will closely monitor the government’s evaluation process and any official announcement on the winning bidder in the future and what IDBI Bank will do in the direction of its future ownership and strategic direction.
