The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) introduced a big relief for crores of provident fund subscribers by raising the auto-settlement limit for advance withdrawal claims from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. This is part of EPFO’s online transformation to make settlement of claims quicker, simpler, and transparent for members with valid KYC details.

Under the new system, advance claims of up to ₹5 lakh that are fully KYC-linked, Aadhaar-verified, and validated will now be handled in an auto-settlement process and thus with less manual verification. This will allow eligible people to get their money much faster, especially during a period of emergency or critical financial need.
Previously, the auto-settlement facility was only for advance claims up to ₹1 lakh. EPFO expects a much larger number of subscribers to benefit from quicker claim processing by raising the limit fivefold. If all eligibility conditions and KYC requirements are met, eligible claims in the auto-settlement system are generally taken care of within three days, it said.
The auto-settlement facility covers any advance withdrawals for approved purposes such as medical treatment, education, marriage, housing-related needs, and other permitted advances under EPFO rules. Since the claims are processed automatically via the IT system, members will see fewer delays and reduced paperwork. Any claims that need to be further examined or do not pass system validation may still need to be manually verified.
The enhancement is part of EPFO’s wider Centralised IT Enabled Services (CITES) initiative to modernise the provident fund system by introducing a unified digital platform. In addition to faster claim processing, the new system also offers services such as automated pre-validation, simplified transfers, improved pension services, and access to EPFO services from any regional office across the country.
The UAN (Universal Account Number) that is active and linked with Aadhaar, PAN, and a verified bank account is required for processing faster. The KYC details that are required for the auto-settlement process should be complete and accurate for a claim to be accepted. If the documents are incomplete or the details of the members are not complete, the manual process will be hampered or will be done.
The new reform will also mean that millions of EPFO subscribers will have access to their provident fund savings in case they are in need. Thus, by making the auto-settlement limit a new ₹5 lakh and developing digital services, EPFO will further improve service delivery and reduce processing time and make the claim settlement process more efficient for all employees in India.
