N Chandrasekaran has quit the chairmanship of Tata Sons, which abruptly ends the chance for Chandrasekaran to continue to chair the company beyond his present tenure. Chandrasekaran has been chairman from 2017 till February 20, 2027, when his term of service will end.

The development comes on the eve of the Tata Sons Annual General Meeting on August 18, 2026, when questions about Chandrasekaran’s reappointment had been on the rise. There had been weeks of uncertainty about his job performance at Tata Sons to which he was still waiting for an answer. His current five-year term runs from February 21, 2022, to February 20, 2027.
Chandrasekaran's exit marks the end of a significant chapter in Tata Group's history.
The resignation follows disputes between Tata Sons and the Tata Trusts, which owns about 66% of the holding company's equity. According to Reuters, there was friction with board representation, strategic direction, Air India's losses, and Shapoorji Pallonji Group's stake in Tata Sons over the appointment process. Chandrasekaran's reappointment was still to be resolved for months.
Chandrasekaran joined Tata Group in 1987 through Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and rose through the ranks before taking over as TCS Chief Executive in 2009. He was appointed chairman of Tata Sons in 2017. Tata Group made an aggressive move into new-age businesses under his leadership as well as continued to invest heavily in the existing businesses. Tata’s own corporate records indicate him as chairman of Tata Sons and note his appointment in February 2017.
Although Chandrasekaran has resigned from seeking a continuation of his chairmanship, Chandrasekaran’s decision does not mean he leaves Tata Sons immediately. He will be in the position until February 2027. It will be the transition and the group will work at finding his successor.
What will be the future of Tata Group after the leadership change of Chandrasekaran?
And now N Chandrasekaran’s decade-long tenure at Tata Sons is coming to a close. His departure is one of the most significant leadership changes in India’s largest business group in recent years and his stay until February 2027 will allow Tata Sons to plan the next step in its evolution.
