LIC Q1 Results: Profit Jumps 23% to ₹13,492 Crore, Premium Income Crosses ₹1.27 Lakh Crore

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) posted very strong first quarter FY27 results with its standalone net profit rising 23% year-on-year to ₹13,492 crore on a higher premium income, a better mix of products and better profitability. The state-owned insurer is also expected to report total premium income of ₹1,27,250 crore in the current fiscal year as a percentage of the total insurance market.

LIC Q1 Results

LIC Q1 FY27 Highlights (YoY). Net Profit: ₹13,492 crore (up 23%). Total Premium Income: ₹1,27,250 crore (up 6.8%). Net Premium Income: Grew around 7%. Value of New Business (VNB): ₹3,136 crore (up 61.3%). VNB Margin: 22.9% up from 15.4% a year ago. Higher Premiums and Better Product Mix Drive Growth

LIC’s quarterly earnings were driven by healthy premium collections and a continued shift toward higher-margin non-participating insurance products. Large growth in individual and group business drove an improvement in overall profitability despite rising competition from private insurers.

The company also reported healthy growth in Annualised Premium Equivalent (APE) as new policies are well-suited to the company and customers have continued to trust it.

Profitability Improves Sharply

One of the big highlights of the quarter was the significant change of Value of New Business (VNB) that jumped more than 61% year-on-year. The corresponding VNB margin increased to 22.9%, which means LIC is generating more profit from every new policy sold.

The higher margins indicate that LIC is focused on products that are more profitable to consumers and also maintain its dominant market position. The long-term earnings quality of LIC is important to analysts.

Positive Outlook

India is still very low in life insurance penetration compared to most developed countries, and therefore offers many long-term growth opportunities for LIC. Rising financial awareness, increased household incomes and greater demand for protection and retirement products will drive premium growth in the future.

The company will also enhance its distribution and digital capabilities to increase its distribution network and digital presence (as well as to penetrate both urban and rural markets in the future).

What It Means for Investors

LIC’s Q1 FY27 results show good profitability and steady premium growth. The strong VNB growth and margin expansion show that LIC’s strategy of a more product-oriented business model is paying off. Investors will now focus on LIC’s future premium growth, persistency ratio, and margin trends as LIC matures in an increasingly competitive insurance market.
