HDFC Tightens Airport Lounge Access – New Rules July 2026

HDFC Bank is tougher on airport lounge access on its credit cards, effective July 2026. This is because the company wants lounge access to be more comparable to the usage of the card and the only person who gets the premium is the one who is in the middle of spending.

Hence, cardholders are now eligible to get three complimentary lounge visits per quarter but only if they spend a minimum amount on their HDFC credit card. To qualify for the benefit, customers need to spend at least ₹60,000 in the previous quarter on their HDFC credit card. This is true for all eligible cards, including premium cards having more relaxed access.

The move is seen as part of HDFC’s larger mission to curb costs and increase card usage. Lounge access has long been one of the most precious features of premium credit cards, but high demand and high costs for banks have forced issuers to tighten eligibility. By linking lounge visits to spending, HDFC ensures that benefits are reserved for active and high‑value customers.

This change means cardholders should plan quarterly spending to receive lounge access. Those who don’t make it to ₹60,000 will lose access in the next quarter, regardless of their card tier. Users who relied on lounge visits without consistently meeting high spending levels would be particularly hard hit.

HDFC’s decision is emblematic of a broader trend among banks to recalibrate credit card benefits and privileges. With mounting operational costs and competition, issuers are starting to tie benefits to spending behaviors. Lounge access, once a common perk of premium cards, is now conditional but is a factor in the decision-making process and customers should take inventory of how they use it in a different way.

HDFC’s tighter lounge access rules are a huge change for credit card benefits. The three complimentary visits per quarter are still attractive but the ₹60,000 spend requirement puts a new challenge on cardholders. Frequent travelers with a high level of spending on lounge access will still enjoy them, but others will need to adjust their spending or look for other cards with more flexible lounge access.
