HDFC Bank appointed Rajiv Kumar, former Finance Secretary and Chief Election Commissioner, as part-time chairman of a three-year period under the conditions of approval by Reserve Bank of India. This appointment comes at a critical time for the bank after the departure of Atanu Chakraborty in March 2026 and interim succession of veteran banker Keki Mistry.

As part-time chairman, Rajiv Kumar is going to bring stability and credibility to HDFC Bank’s governance system. In addition to being chairman, he will also be an independent director for 4 years, starting June 30, 2026, after shareholder approval of the board, should he do so. Such dual responsibility signifies that the board has confidence that he is well positioned to lead this bank on its next stage of growth and development.

Kumar’s distinguished career in public service adds weight to his new role. A 1984 batch IAS officer from Jharkhand cadre, he served as Finance Secretary until February 2020, where he was instrumental in reforms in India’s banking sector. He is also credited with introducing the “4R” strategy—Recognition, Resolution, Recapitalisation and Reforms—to clean up public sector bank balance sheets between 2017 and 2020. Later, as Chief Election Commissioner he led the world’s largest democratic exercise and received praise for record voter participation.

The appointment comes in the context of Atanu Chakraborty's resignation earlier this year, which came in the wake of ethical issues. The allegations were later rejected through an independent legal review but the episode left a temporary leadership vacuum. RBI’s approval made Keki Mistry interim chairman to sustain the succession until a permanent successor could be found.

The stock market response to the news was cautious with HDFC Bank shares down slightly in the wake of news. But brokerage firm Jefferies maintained a Buy rating and stated that Kumar’s appointment would be in line with CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan’s leadership style and would also build confidence among the investors in the firm’s long-term strategy.

In conclusion, Rajiv Kumar’s appointment as a part-time chairman is a very important moment for HDFC Bank as he is very well trained in finance, governance and public policy. His experience will strengthen the boardroom of the bank and give it stability after months of uncertainty. As HDFC Bank goes through leadership change and prepares for the future in the competitive banking business, it will be closely watched by the investors and industry players in India.
