Apple will now allow Apple Account purchases with card payments in India - a big deal for the millions of Apple customers who have been paying for apps, subscriptions and digital services with alternative payment methods in the past years.
With card payments restored, eligible users can use their credit and debit cards to add money to their Apple Account or purchase from Apple's digital platforms. Apps, games, movies, music, cloud storage and subscriptions are all available from the company's various online services.
That change comes after Apple previously limited some card-based payment options in India following regulation changes related to recurring online payments. Those regulations required additional authentication and compliance measures for recurring transactions, which led many global digital service providers to modify their payment systems for Indian customers.
At that time, many Apple users relied on Apple Account balances, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), internet banking, gift cards or other payment methods to continue buying digital content and managing subscriptions. In other words, there were all the things; it was just that without direct card payments, there would be a little inconvenience for a lot of customers with recurring subscriptions.
As card payment functionality is slowly restored, users are expected to find it easier to purchase with the help of the card and can make it easier to purchase with the help of the Apple Account. The payment methods can now be added to Apple Account payments for customers, so customers don’t have to depend on pre-paid balances or other options to pay.
Analysts in the industry say this is an example of Apple’s continuing drive to enhance the customer experience in one of its fastest growing markets. India is now a key market for the tech giant, not only for smartphone sales but also for digital services (i.e., App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud+, Apple Arcade).
The availability of card payments will also benefit app developers and content providers who are part of Apple's ecosystem. Because easier payment options lead to more convenient customer options, more people are using payments that will lead to a higher transaction volume and higher subscription renewals (in general).
Customers should be aware that the payment availability might be different for their issuing bank, card network and account. Users who can’t add their cards immediately may need to update their payment information and wait for the feature to be available on their accounts. Apple’s developers will continue to update compatibility as the product gets released.
