The announcement came after Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the digital transformation of India, AI innovation, cloud infrastructure, exports, and job creation.

Amazon's Biggest India Commitment Yet

Amazon’s cumulative investment in India from 2010 to 2030 will exceed $88 billion as it will be another area of the company’s global strategy that is crucial to India.

Jassy said India has emerged as one of Amazon’s most important growth markets, driven by strong demand across its e-commerce, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services businesses.

The company says the $48 billion investment will allow for the expansion of the business in logistics, technology infrastructure, cloud services, AI development, and digital commerce.

$21 Billion for AI and Cloud Infrastructure

And a large part of this investment will go into artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Amazon announced that more than $21 billion will be invested in expanding AI and cloud infrastructure between 2026 and 2030, including an additional $13 billion commitment unveiled by Jassy during his India visit.

The investment will enhance the presence of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in India through increased data center capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

The move will facilitate startups, enterprises, developers, and government organizations to have access to:

  1. Advanced AI technologies
  2. Custom AI chips
  3. Managed AI services
  4. Secure cloud platforms
  5. Developer tools
  6. Scalable digital infrastructure

Industry experts say the investment would accelerate India’s ambitions to become a world AI and innovation center, and would not only help the country’s innovation momentum but also its bottom line.

Supporting India's Digital Economy

Amazon has contributed to India's digital transformation over the past decade, it said.

Since entering the Indian market, the company says it has:

  1. Digitized more than 12 million small businesses.
  2. Enabled over $20 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports.
  3. Supported almost 2.8 million jobs.
  4. Trained over 10 million Indians in cloud and digital skills.

The company views India as a strategic market where digital adoption is increasing in India and businesses, consumers, and government institutions.

Focus on Jobs, Exports, and AI Education

As for the future, Amazon set ambitious targets for India that are aligned with India’s economic development goals.

The company pledged to:

  1. Support 3.8 million jobs
  2. Enable $80 billion in cumulative exports.
  3. Provide AI-driven benefits to 15 million small businesses.
  4. Provide AI education to 4 million government school students.

Such initiatives will be very helpful to workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital inclusion throughout the country. Aligning with Modi's Vision of Viksit Bharat

During the announcement, Jassy praised Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), describing Amazon as a long-term partner in India's growth journey.

As the investment is coming at a time when India is rapidly emerging as one of the major technology hubs for global investment in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing, especially in digital technology and advanced manufacturing.

One of the world’s fastest-growing internet economies and a thriving startup ecosystem, India has attracted huge investments from global technology giants looking to tap India’s digital opportunities.

What this means for India

Amazon’s $48 billion investment announcement will strengthen India’s position as a world technology and innovation powerhouse. Cloud infrastructure, AI capabilities, digital commerce networks, and skill development programs could generate substantial economic activity and support millions of businesses, workers, students, and entrepreneurs.

As global competition for AI leadership grows, Amazon’s massive investment is a testament to growing international confidence in India’s key role as a key player in the next phase of technological transformation.
