Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has accused the Adani Group of “lying brazenly” to stock exchanges about its alleged plans to enter India’s airline business. The fresh controversy comes after the publication of a letter purported to be written by Adani Airports to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) requesting a waiver to the restriction on airport operators entering the scheduled airline business.
According to reports, the purported letter dated June 4 sought permission that would allow Adani Airports and its affiliates to invest in, establish or control a scheduled airline. Moitra has used the reported communication to question earlier public statements about the group's interest in launching an airline.
The project has attracted political and industry attention because Adani Airports owns several of India’s largest airports. But entering the airline business could give the conglomerate a place in both the aviation space and airline operations.
The matter is also in the middle of discussions within the government about whether existing restrictions on airport operators owning airlines should be relaxed. Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol told Rajya Sabha on Friday that the government obtained a request for a waiver but that the Civil Aviation Ministry had not yet considered the request.
But the Ministry of Civil Aviation has also indicated there is no general restriction preventing airport operators from entering the airline business, although there are restrictions on cross-ownership and competition.
Moitra’s allegations come at a moment when India’s aviation market is facing significant changes. Major players such as IndiGo and Air India are now leading the way but policymakers also want to foster competition and grow India’s aviation industry.
If Adani were to enter the airline business eventually, it could represent an enormous new development for India’s aviation industry. The existing airport portfolio of the group might have some operational benefits, but the cost and operational challenges of running an airline are very different from operating airports.
Importantly, an airline entry by the Adani Group has not been officially confirmed. The waiver request suggests the group has at least sought regulatory clarity or permission, but it does not by itself establish that an airline will definitely be launched.
Moitra's claim that the group misled stock exchanges is also a political allegation and should not be treated as an established fact. The precise contents and implications of the reported communication, as well as any contradiction with previous corporate disclosures, would need to be assessed through official documents and regulatory responses.
The controversy will continue to be under scrutiny as the government considers the waiver request and the Adani Group’s position becomes clearer.
