Adani Group and Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Company (IHC) have announced a landmark $11.5 billion (₹1.08 lakh crore) investment to build a massive integrated aluminium plant in Odisha. This project is being hailed as India’s largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the metallurgy sector and Odisha’s biggest industrial venture to date.

The joint venture will be 50:50 between Adani Enterprises and IHC's International Resources Holding (IRH). The investment will be spread out in two phases of ₹66,000 crore in the first phase and ₹44,000 crore in the second phase. The project will include a 4 million tonnes per annum alumina refinery, a 2 MMTPA aluminium smelter, a 4,000 MW captive power plant (including renewable energy), and a 1 MMTPA downstream manufacturing park.
The employment impact will be significant. Almost 53,500 jobs will be created in the construction phase and 18,500 jobs will be employed during operations. In addition to direct job creation, the project will create indirect employment in logistics, engineering, maintenance, and ancillary sectors and will also enhance Odisha’s economy and the industrial ecosystem.
In terms of strategy, the project places Odisha as a global aluminium hub. Already accounting for 54% of India’s aluminium production, the state will now be a key player in the international supply chain. For India, it reduces reliance on imports of value‑added aluminium products and strengthens supply chain resilience to meet the country’s larger industrial and clean energy goals.
Leadership statements highlight the significance of this investment. Karan Adani highlighted Odisha as a long-term manufacturing destination and the promise of the project to form an aluminium ecosystem. Syed Basar Shueb, CEO of IHC, said the investment is in line with IHC’s global strategy to build companies in critical minerals to support industrial development and clean energy transition. Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha Chief Minister, said the project will take the state to a level of integration with aluminium in the world supply chain.
The Adani–IHC aluminium project is a transformative investment for Odisha and India. The project is of huge scale, job creation, and strategic importance to India, but also gives the impression that the country’s manufacturing sector is gaining confidence globally.
