Coursera to Cut Jobs After Udemy Merger as Post-Acquisition Restructuring Begins

Online learning platform Coursera has announced workforce reductions as part of its post-merger restructuring following its acquisition of Udemy. The move is aimed at streamlining operations, eliminating overlapping roles, and integrating the businesses after the completion of the merger earlier this year.

The company said the layoffs will affect an unspecified number of employees. While Coursera has not disclosed how many jobs will be eliminated, it expects to incur restructuring charges of $8 million to $11 million, primarily related to severance payments and employee benefits. Most of these expenses are expected to be recognized during the second half of 2026.

The workforce reduction comes less than two months after Coursera completed its acquisition of Udemy, creating one of the world's largest online education companies. The merger was designed to strengthen the combined company's position in the rapidly growing digital learning market, particularly as demand for artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and professional upskilling courses continues to increase.

Like many mergers across the technology industry, the integration process involves consolidating departments, removing duplicate functions, and improving operational efficiency. Analysts say such restructuring measures are common after major acquisitions as companies seek to reduce costs and maximize synergies between the two organizations.

As of the end of 2025, Coursera employed approximately 1,307 full-time employees, while Udemy had around 1,380 employees. Although the exact number of affected workers has not been revealed, the restructuring is expected to help the combined company optimize resources and align its workforce with long-term business priorities.

Despite the layoffs, Coursera has reiterated its commitment to expanding its learning ecosystem. The company continues to focus on serving individual learners, businesses, universities, and governments through a broad portfolio of online courses, professional certificates, and degree programs. Company executives have previously stated that the merger will enable faster innovation, broader content offerings, and enhanced AI-powered learning experiences.

Industry experts believe the online education sector is entering a new phase of consolidation as companies adapt to changing learner preferences and increasing competition. While demand for AI-related skills remains strong, providers are also under pressure to improve profitability and operational efficiency. The Coursera-Udemy combination reflects this broader trend, with companies seeking greater scale and a stronger enterprise presence.

Employees, investors, and customers will now be closely watching how smoothly the integration progresses over the coming months. Coursera has indicated that workforce reductions in certain regions could extend beyond 2026 where local labor regulations require longer consultation periods.

Although the layoffs mark a difficult chapter for affected employees, Coursera maintains that the restructuring is intended to position the combined company for sustainable long-term growth. As digital education continues to evolve alongside advances in artificial intelligence, the newly merged organization aims to strengthen its leadership in the global online learning market while delivering expanded opportunities for learners worldwide.
