Amazon has announced a fresh round of job cuts within its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) organization as the technology giant refines its artificial intelligence strategy. The move is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at concentrating resources on AI initiatives that the company believes will deliver the greatest value to customers.

The company did not disclose the number of employees affected. However, an Amazon spokesperson emphasized that the layoffs do not signal a retreat from AI. Instead, the company said it remains deeply committed to developing advanced AI technologies while streamlining its priorities.
Focus Shifts to High-Impact AI Projects
According to Amazon, it has been building large AI models for several years and continues to view artificial intelligence as one of its most important long-term investments. The latest workforce reduction is intended to sharpen the company's focus on projects that can be developed and deployed more quickly for customers.
The restructuring follows leadership changes within the AGI division. Former AGI chief Rohit Prasad and AGI Lab head David Luan departed earlier, and Amazon reorganized its AGI efforts under senior vice president Peter DeSantis, combining them with silicon engineering and quantum computing initiatives.
Part of Broader Workforce Realignment
The AGI layoffs come months after Amazon eliminated around 16,000 jobs across the company as part of a wider cost-cutting and organizational restructuring plan. The latest reductions are more targeted and reflect the company's ongoing efforts to optimize teams while continuing heavy investment in AI technologies.
Reports indicate that teams under AGI executives Adeeb Shanaa and Vishal Sharma were among those impacted, although Amazon has not confirmed the full scope of the layoffs.
AI Investments Continue
Despite trimming parts of its AGI workforce, Amazon continues to invest aggressively in artificial intelligence. The company is expanding its Nova family of foundation models, enhancing generative AI capabilities through Amazon Web Services (AWS), and integrating AI across its products and services.
Industry analysts view the move as a strategic realignment rather than a slowdown in AI ambitions. As competition in generative AI intensifies, Amazon appears focused on allocating talent and capital toward projects with the strongest commercial potential.
The latest restructuring underscores a broader trend across the technology sector, where companies are balancing significant AI investments with workforce optimization to improve efficiency while accelerating innovation.
