More than 4,500 Google employees signed a petition calling on CEO Sundar Pichai to make better job protection as workers worry about AI-driven restructuring and workforce cuts in the tech industry.
The petition, signed by members of the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU), calls for guaranteed severance packages, voluntary exit options before layoffs, and a more transparent and predictable process for workforce reductions. And workers must be supported and communicated with when the company changes, employees say, as Google is investing billions in artificial intelligence.
Employees want better Severance Benefits
Workers who signed the petition say they want Google to take several actions before layoffs will take place in the future. Their demands are as follows:
For those with affected employees, severance packages are guaranteed. Voluntary exit packages before compulsory layoffs. A more predictable and transparent layoff process. No performance-based ranking quotas linked to job cuts. Paid leave for those displaced and transition support for those affected.
The employees believe that these would decrease uncertainty and help them to have greater financial security when they were under restructuring.
The protest was held at Google’s Campus.
The petition was delivered to Sundar Pichai and three senior Google executives after nearly 100 employees gathered outside one of Google's campuses in support of the campaign.
Participants wore black T-shirts and carried banners displaying names of those who signed the petition. According to the Alphabet Workers Union, the demonstration is the largest employee-led campaign on job security in the company’s history.
Union Criticizes Layoff Strategy
Parul Koul, the president of the Alphabet Workers Union, criticized Google’s approach to workforce cuts, saying the company's performance as a financial success makes layoffs difficult to justify.
She said the company is in excellent business shape and the workforce reductions indicate a decision to prioritize profitability over employees.
The union argues that workers deserve stronger protections as Google continues to invest in artificial intelligence and related infrastructure.
AI investment raises employee concerns.
Google has been spending huge amounts on AI technologies, data centers, customized AI chips, and the Gemini AI ecosystem. While such investments are intended to enhance the company’s long-term competitiveness, staff worry that automation and organizational restructuring could result in layoffs in every department.
