There is a government scheme of up to ₹2.5 lakh for inter-caste couples to receive financial help under which a government programme introduced to promote inter-caste marriages. But not all love marriages are eligible under the Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages, which aims to bring about social harmony by supporting couples breaking the caste barriers.

The scheme provides eligible couples with a direct benefit transfer of up to ₹2.5 lakh but with certain conditions. For instance, one partner has to be a Scheduled Caste and the marriage must be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act. The couple has to apply within the specified time period and the application has to be verified.
Even though the scheme may have its potential impact, many couples are unaware of the scheme. Because of the lack of publicity and complicated paperwork, even eligible applicants generally do not receive the financial support. Thus the program has not quite achieved its purpose of promoting social integration.
State governments also have similar programmes in line with the central scheme. Rajasthan offers up to ₹5 lakh, for example, and Bihar offers around ₹1 lakh. States like Karnataka and Maharashtra also have their own programs of financial help, which expands the opportunities for couples in inter-caste marriages.
The larger aim of these schemes is not only financial support but also social acceptance. By incentivizing inter-caste marriages, the government is trying to eradicate caste-based discrimination and promote inclusivity. But experts say awareness campaigns and simplified application processes are required for deserving couples to benefit.
In conclusion, although inter-caste marriages are eligible for up to ₹2.5 lakh of financial assistance, eligibility conditions and verification requirements are different for different love marriages. Greater awareness and easier access to this progressive initiative would help more couples take advantage of this progressive initiative and turn policy into real social change.
