NSE & BSE Closed for 3 Days Next Week

Indian stock exchanges will hold a weekday trading holiday for the last week of June and there may be a brief pause in market activity. The break will be part of the official trading holiday calendar and will affect all three kinds of markets (equities, derivatives, and currencies).

The holiday falls on Friday, June 26, because India is observing Muharram, one of the most important occasions in the Islamic calendar. Both the NSE and the Bombay Stock Exchange will be closed for the day. Trading in equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR) will also be suspended.

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. It is a day that carries deep religious and cultural significance, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. In India, Muharram is a public holiday, and government offices, schools, banks, and major financial markets are closed.

For investors and traders, the holiday is a three-day break from trading since Saturday and Sunday are regular weekend holidays. Normal operations will resume on Monday, June 29, ensuring continuity in the following week. Market participants are advised to plan their strategies accordingly, especially those engaged in short-term trading, IPO subscriptions, or contracts requiring settlement during this period.

Such scheduled breaks typically lead to heightened activity in the sessions immediately before and after the holiday and can result in increased volatility. Traders often adjust positions to account for the pause, which can lead to higher trading volumes when the markets reopen, as investors return to execute pending trades.

The inclusion of Muharram in the trading holiday calendar reflects the exchanges’ practice of aligning with major national and religious observances. This uniformity ensures predictability for domestic and global investors, reinforcing transparency in India’s financial markets. While the holiday may briefly impact weekly trading volumes, it is unlikely to affect overall market sentiment in the long run.

With NSE and BSE closed on June 26, investors should mark their calendars and plan ahead. A three-day hiatus from trading will provide a brief respite, but there will be a return to business once the markets resume. As India observes Muharram, the holiday underscores the balance between cultural traditions and financial operations in the country’s economic landscape.
