Flipkart Likely to Sell ₹700 Crore Stake in Shadowfax Technologies to Monetise Investment

Walmart-backed Flipkart is going to sell a portion of its stake in Shadowfax Technologies at around ₹700–750 crore, one of the ways in which it is monetizing its investment in fast-growing startups. Flipkart has begun talks to sell part of its holding in the logistics company via a block deal, according to reports.

As sources close to the deal say, the proposed transaction might include up to 6% of Flipkart's stake in Shadowfax. Flipkart is expected to retain a significant stake in the company, as one of the promoter shareholders and is not going to complete its exit.

The sale of the stake is part of Flipkart's ongoing investment monetization strategy. The company has been able to make significant returns from almost all portfolio investments by selling off some while focusing on the core e-commerce and digital businesses and building a strong position in the industry. The move will also allow Flipkart to focus on capital allocation and not to go out with one of the leading logistics companies in India.

Shadowfax Technologies has become one of India’s largest logistics and last-mile delivery platforms since it was established in 2015. It offers e-commerce, quick commerce, food delivery, healthcare, and retail with a network of delivery services to customers across the country. With rapid expansion, Shadowfax Technologies has become a key player in India’s rapidly developing logistics industry.

Shadowfax has attracted significant investment from a number of large investors such as Flipkart and other big players in terms of investment. The logistics company is growing as same-day and next-day shipping volumes are growing in India and online shopping is booming.

There’s a view among market experts that Flipkart’s sale of a stake reflects a maturing startup investment ecosystem where early investors are able to sell off a portion of their stake in the business but still fund companies with the potential to grow in the long run and provide liquidity to existing shareholders and opportunities for new institutional investors to get involved in promising companies.

The deal comes at a time of increasing investor interest in India's logistics and supply chain industry, which is seeing more and more e-commerce penetration, digitalization, and rapid growth in quick-commerce services. Analysts believe companies like Shadowfax are positioned to take advantage of these long-term trends.

Neither Flipkart nor Shadowfax has officially announced the transaction, and no one, either Flipkart nor Shadowfax, has yet to publicly confirm the deal and has not said anything about the size, the timing of the sale, and the value of the stake sale. Things are still in discussion, and the final structure of the deal could change before any formal announcement is made.

If it goes through, the transaction would be another step in Flipkart's portfolio management strategy and would also see the company’s startup ecosystem evolve. So it will be closely watched by investors and industry observers on the side of the business now that the talks are in progress.
