Dating Apps Move Beyond Swiping: Tinder and Hinge Bet Big on Real-Life Meetups to Build Genuine Connections

For years, online dating has been about one routine— swipe, match, chat, and often get ghosted. But after more than a decade of swipe-based dating, the industry’s biggest players are changing course.

Dating Apps Focus on Real-Life Events and Offline Datin
AI

Match Group, which owns Tinder and Hinge, is steering away from swiping and toward real-life experiences in which people can feel more connected with one another.

The company's new quarterly update shows a growing focus on features that encourage users to meet offline rather than spend more time chatting through screens.

Young Singles Want Real-Life Connections

Match Group’s own internal research found that roughly half of singles from 18 to 29 prefer building stronger relationships using in-person interactions instead of digital conversations.

Indeed, 60% of people who don’t use Tinder said they would consider joining if the platform offered social events and opportunities to meet people face-to-face.

Such findings suggest that there is increasing demand for authentic social experiences among younger users who are experiencing dating app fatigue.

Tinder Events: Swipes, Social Gatherings

Tinder Events is among Match Group's biggest initiatives.

The feature allows users to:

  • Discover local social events
  • See who is going to attend.
  • Connect with attendees after the event.
  • Build relationships through shared experiences.

The program has already expanded to 10 cities, with locations in Europe, and will reach 36 cities in September before reaching 75 cities by the end of the year.

As CEO Spencer Rascoff says, Tinder Events are also a more affordable way to go on a first date.

While a typical date might cost $20-100, many Tinder Events cost around $30 per person, and nearly 30% of events are completely free.

Double Date Makes Dating Less Awkward

Tinder has realized that meeting strangers alone is scary and introduced Double Date.

The feature allows two friends to connect with another pair, creating a more relaxed and social atmosphere.

The company says users under the age of 30 use Double Date 70% more frequently than older users, which suggests young people prefer group interactions over one-on-one dates.

Hinge Helps You Find Love: Friends Help You Find Love.

Hinge has also introduced a feature called Friends' Take

Friends and family can now add:

Voice notes
Text recommendations
Photos
Short videos

Directly to a user's dating profile

The feature adds an extra layer of trust and authenticity by allowing people close to the user to vouch for their personality.

Match Group also noted India as an important expansion market for Hinge, indicating greater attention towards the fast-growing online dating market in India.

Profiles Are Going to Get More Personal

Dating profiles are evolving beyond photographs.

Tinder has introduced features like:

Astrology Mode
Music Mode

These features allow users to show what their interests, personality, and lifestyle are like beyond just profile pictures.

Hinge's new Signals feature also rewards users who actively participate in conversations and follow through with meeting plans. During testing, the feature also increased selfie verification by 15%, improving trust and profile authenticity.

Missed Connections is another experimental feature that is being tested in Canada and Australia. It helps users come in touch with people that they may have met online about a week ago, and it combines offline and online matchmaking.

AI Powers Innovation Behind the Scenes

While artificial intelligence continues to have a strong influence on the dating world, Match Group says AI is being used primarily to speed up product development and not to replace human relationships.

The company explained that AI enables teams to develop and test new features much faster, helping create tools that encourage genuine human interaction instead of endless screen time.

The Future of Online Dating

Match Group’s latest strategy suggests dating apps could be less about finding matches and much more about creating meaningful experiences.

Tinder and Hinge are taking digital matchmaking and real-world events, trusted recommendations from friends, and smarter profile features to the next level and bringing back what many users feel has been lost—the inherent thrill of meeting someone in the real world.

But for millions of singles, the next great love story might not have started with a swipe but with a shared experience in the real world.
