Tata Communications Q1 Profit Drops 29% Despite Double-Digit Revenue Growth; Exceptional Loss Hits Earnings

Tata Communications Ltd. reported mixed financial results for the first quarter of FY2026-27, and consolidated net profit was down 29.35% year-on-year despite delivering healthy double-digit revenue growth.

The Tata Group company's earnings were impacted by a much higher exceptional loss that was higher than those of the other companies, despite its core business posting stable operating performance.

Net Profit Declines

Tata Communications posted net profit of ₹134 crore in the quarter ended June 30th 2026, versus ₹189 crore in the previous quarter of the year.

The company said the decline was mainly due to an exceptional loss of ₹106 crore, considerably higher than the ₹20 crore exceptional loss reported during the same period last year.

Revenue Registers Strong Growth

The communications technology major’s revenue from higher-end products has also increased significantly (albeit at a lower profit rate).

Revenue: ₹6,582.8 crore (up 10.5% YoY). Q1 FY26 Revenue: ₹5,959 crore

The revenue growth reflects continued demand in the enterprise connectivity, cloud, cybersecurity, and digital solutions businesses.

EBITDA Performance

At the operational level, Tata Communications had stable growth.

EBITDA: ₹1,230.2 crore (up 8.2% YoY). Previous Year EBITDA: ₹1,136.8 crore

But profitability margins remained under a little pressure.

EBITDA Margin: 18.7%

Q1 FY26 EBITDA Margin: 19.0%

In a year, we had a margin of about 30 basis points, which we could see as higher operating costs even as revenues are higher.

Management Remains Optimistic

Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Communications, also commented on the quarterly results.

According to the CEO, the company has started the financial year on a good footing with positive momentum in the company both its core connectivity business and digital portfolio.

He added that the company's normalised EBITDA performance remains healthy and management remains confident of delivering double-digit EBITDA growth in the current financial year.

Key Strategic Priorities

Tata Communications said its focus for FY27 is:

It is accelerating growth in its network fabric business. Expanding platform-based revenue streams. Increasing profitability in digital services. Increasing EBITDA-to-cash conversion. Enhancing operational efficiency.

Management believes these strategies will drive long-term sustainable growth and growth will be sustained long-term growth that can be sustained despite short-term profitability pressure for long-term profit growth even in the short term.

Market Outlook

Investors will be monitoring how rapidly the firm can improve margins while expanding its digital services portfolio.

The exceptional loss still hit the company in the quarter, but strong revenue growth and management’s positive guidance indicate that the business fundamentals remain strong.

Analysts will also monitor how the company will be able to expand enterprise digital solutions and maintain profitability as competition in the communications technology sector gets tougher and tougher.
