Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella has sent out a strong message to businesses that are going to embrace artificial intelligence: if we don’t control our AI data and metadata then we’ll not be competitive in the future.

Nadella said organizations that do not maintain ownership and control over their AI-generated data “will not remain firms” and we do not need to do this in enterprise AI. Nadella’s comments highlight the increasing importance of data governance as AI is being integrated into business operations in every field.
Nadella said that companies need not only to use AI models but also to keep the metadata from AI interactions. That metadata— prompts, responses, user feedback, operational insights— can be a great strategic asset. By keeping that metadata, companies can fine-tune existing AI systems or even train their own AI models in the future, meaning they are less dependent on third-party suppliers.
Microsoft management has claimed AI is a core business capability and not just a software thing. As companies generate more and more proprietary data due to AI-driven workflows, keeping ownership of that information will be critical to innovation, productivity and competitive advantage.
Nadella also stressed the need for organizations to gain more control over the AI technologies they purchase. He called for stronger rights protecting AI buyers so that businesses don’t have to be locked into a platform/vendor and can access, export, and use their own AI-generated data.
His comments come at a time when businesses are rapidly adopting generative AI to automate tasks, improve customer service, develop software and make decisions, or to do so at a much faster pace. As AI adoption grows, questions of data ownership, model transparency, privacy and vendor lock-in are becoming more important.
Industry experts believe metadata produced by AI systems could be one of the most valuable business assets in the next few years and the industry’s most valuable data. Companies that manage and analyze this data well will be able to create customized AI models for their industries, customers and operational needs.
Microsoft is one of the leading companies that has been driving enterprise AI adoption through Copilot, Azure AI services and AI initiatives in general. Nadella’s remarks are consistent with the company’s overall vision of AI that AI should empower organizations in a way that will keep their most valuable digital assets in place.
As companies continue spending heavily on AI technology, Nadella’s message is a clear reminder that to be successful, not only does it take the investment of AI tools but also the ownership of the data and knowledge the tools generate. Companies that focus on AI data governance today will be better prepared to operate in the AI-driven economy of the future.
