Old British journalist and ITV Political Editor Robert Peston has issued a warning about the fast rate of AI expansion, cautioning that an unprecedented wave of investment in AI infrastructure could cause a world financial crisis within the next one to two years.
In Radio Times, as he spoke to Peston about his new thriller, The Kill Switch, he said the huge amount of money poured into AI data centres, computing infrastructure, and power generation is raising concerns about an economic bubble with potentially serious consequences.

Peston argued that governments and investors are pouring enormous amounts of capital into AI infrastructure at an unprecedented pace.
"I am genuinely anxious that we're going to get a serious financial crash, globally, in the next year or two, because there is the most astonishing amount of money going into building the data centres and power plants for AI."
If investment continues to outpace sustainable returns, the AI sector could create financial imbalances that ripple out to the global economy, he said.
"Why Don't People Listen?"
Peston’s former warnings about major economic events on the rise, and he thinks he often feels that the concern about new risks gets ignored until it is too late.
"I do have a feeling of 'Why don't people listen to me when I say things are about to go awfully badly wrong?'"
Peston’s reputation for his coverage of the 2008 global financial crisis has been much larger as a whole, and he has been credited with warning of economic risks before they were mainstream. He also admitted that he raised concerns about the emerging COVID-19 pandemic in the early days.
AI Should be a Global Policy Priority.
Peston thinks artificial intelligence should be the central focus for world leaders. Public debate has not kept pace with the rapid growth of AI and its potential impact on economies, employment, and society, he said.
He said he felt that AI regulation, infrastructure investment, and workforce disruption should receive far more attention than they do now.
