The Income Tax Department has published the offline Excel utility for ITR-7 for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, which makes it easier for the tax return preparation and filing process for the eligible entities without the need for a constant internet connection.

The announcement was made through the department's official X (formerly Twitter) account as part of the ongoing income tax return (ITR) filing season.
With this release, eligible taxpayers can now prepare their returns offline, validate the information, generate a JSON file, and upload it to the Income Tax e-Filing portal for final submission.
Who needs to file ITR-7?
The ITR-7 return form is not for individual salaried taxpayers.
Instead, it applies to specific entities that are required to furnish returns under the following provisions of the Income-tax Act:
- Section 139(4A): Charitable or religious trusts earning income from property held under trust.
- Section 139(4B): Political parties required to file income tax returns.
- Section 139(4C): Certain institutions such as scientific research associations, news agencies, educational institutions, hospitals, and other specified entities.
- Section 139(4D): Universities, colleges, and other educational institutions are not required to furnish returns under any other provision.
Companies and organizations that fall into these categories can use the newly released offline utility to complete their tax compliance.
How the Offline Utility Works
Excel can be used by users to prepare their returns and is not connected to the internet.
According to the filing process, the following steps are taken:
- Download the ITR-7 Excel Utility.
- Enter all required financial and tax information in the utility.
- Validate the information inside the utility.
- Generate the JSON file.
- Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
- Upload the generated JSON file.
- Verify and submit the return electronically.
This offline method is particularly useful for organizations handling large amounts of financial information or operating in areas with limited internet connectivity.
Benefits of the Offline Utility
The new tool is useful for:
- Prepare returns at your convenience if there's no internet access. Built-in validation will detect errors before submission.
- Quick upload process by generating JSON.
- Better accuracy and compliance.
- Works well for trusts, educational institutions, political parties, and other applicable organizations.
- Filing Season Continues
The release of the ITR-7 Excel utility expands the list of offline filing tools already made available by the Income Tax Department for the current assessment year.
Tax experts recommend that eligible organizations start preparing their returns well before the due date to avoid last-minute technical problems and to be able to comply with the law and the regulations.
Entities filing under ITR-7 should also ensure that all supporting documents, financial statements, audit reports (where relevant), and statutory information are updated before submitting their tax returns.
Taxpayers should verify the tax return form based on their legal status and provisions under the Income-tax Act. If necessary, tax consultants can be sought for tax compliance.
