India’s leading telecom operators are set to raise mobile tariffs by up to 15% next year, the biggest price hike in recent years so far in the price war. It comes at a time of rising infrastructure costs, spectrum investments, and profit margins to sustain profits in a fiercely competitive market.

According to industry sources, Jio, Airtel and Vi are expected to implement the hike across prepaid and postpaid plans. The increase will also affect data packs, voice services and bundled offers, and average monthly bills will be elevated for millions of subscribers.
The decision is driven by rising operational costs. Telecom operators have been heavily investing in 5G roll-out, fiber expansion and network modernization. The average data consumption per user is 40 GB per month, they say and tariffs are unsustainable. A tariff increase of 10-15% would be necessary to pay for the extra costs but still maintain service quality.
The tariff hike could also mean higher spending on mobile connectivity for consumers. Basic entry‑level packs may still be affordable, but mid‑range and premium plans may see a greater increase. Companies that lean on mobile data will be more likely to opt for fixed broadband solutions like Jio AirFiber or Airtel Xstream to pay for it.
Market experts believe that the hike will boost telecom operators’ financial health, and they will be able to lower their debt and invest in digital services. At the same time bundled offers with OTT subscriptions, cloud storage and gaming packs are expected to help soften the impact for customers and provide value along with higher tariffs.
The 15 percent tariff hike is a reflection of the telecom industry’s commitment to sustainability.
