Nationalized digital payments system the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been launched in a leading department store in France, its first step in the globalization journey. In doing so, it’s the first time Indian tourists and residents of France will be able to use UPI to pay for a purchase abroad, further cementing India’s fintech presence in the international arena.

The launch was enabled by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and French payment services with seamless integration with the local merchant systems. Now customers can scan QR codes at checkout counters and pay directly from their Indian bank accounts using popular UPI apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm.
This will offer the Indian tourists visiting France annually for a long time to be able to use UPI in Paris, a location of high shopping power in a big shopping centre, which are a major shopping centre. That will reduce dependency on international cards and currency exchange abroad for India in the long run and give travellers a safe and cheap payment method which will be easy to use.
The move also shows the potential of UPI to become a global digital payments standard in India. UPI has already transformed India’s financial system with over 10 billion transactions a month, processed directly in India. And to expand into Europe shows that it is scalable and flexible to fit into new markets.
These are all signs of growing interest in cross-border digital payments. France’s adoption of UPI will likely help to reach Europe’s tourist-heavy countries like Italy, Spain and Switzerland. It also further strengthens India’s economic diplomacy by showcasing its technological innovation on a global platform.
For Indian consumers, the benefits are immediate: no need to carry huge amounts of cash, lower transaction costs compared to card payments, and real-time settlement directly from their bank accounts. Merchants in France, meanwhile, get a new customer base eager to spend through digital channels.
The launch of UPI in a French department store is more than a convenience for travelers; it is an important step in India’s quest to globalise its fintech ecosystem. And with UPI’s expansion around the world it further solidifies India’s standing as a world leader in digital innovation and financial inclusion.
