How BlackRock, Vanguard, ASML, TSMC, Nestlé, and Maersk Shape the Global Economy

Some companies play a huge role in keeping the world economy running—not by governing countries but by creating the basic services, technologies, and infrastructure businesses and consumers depend on every day.

BlackRock, Vanguard, ASML, TSMC, Nestlé, and Maersk are just a few of them, each of them dominating a critical sector of the current economy.

BlackRock and Vanguard are two of the world’s largest asset managers. Together they manage trillions of dollars in cash for individuals, pension funds, governments, and institutions. Through index funds, ETFs, and mutual funds they own thousands of publicly listed companies in virtually every major industry. Many of their assets and the voting rights on many of them are the result of their ownership or control of businesses.

In the technology industry, ASML is in a unique position in the Netherlands, as a technology industry, in that it manufactures the world's advanced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are essential in order to create the latest generation of high-performance semiconductor chips. As only ASML is currently manufacturing these state-of-the-art machines, leading chipmakers depend on its technology.

Those machines are then used by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract semiconductor manufacturer. TSMC fabricates advanced chips designed by Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, and many others. These semiconductors power smartphones, artificial intelligence systems, cloud computing, cars, and every other electronic device worldwide.

Nestlé is one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world. With thousands of products and many well-known brands (coffee, dairy, bottled water, infant nutrition, pet care, confectionery, prepared food, etc.), the company is available in almost every corner of the world.

Maersk’s shipping network, on the other hand, is one of the pillars of global logistics and maritime shipping. The Danish shipping giant transports millions of containers a year and connects manufacturers, exporters, retailers, and consumers in a global market.

While these companies have enormous economic influence, their roles differ greatly. Asset managers allocate capital, technology firms enable innovation, manufacturers supply essential components, consumer goods companies provide everyday products, and logistics providers keep the world going.

They are important not for government power but for running the systems that make up the modern world economy. The companies are a good example of how finance, technology, manufacturing, consumer goods, and logistics are so interdependent, each of them needing specialized companies to keep businesses operating and products flowing through international markets.

As the global economy gets digital and connected to one another, the strategic importance of companies like BlackRock, Vanguard, ASML, TSMC, Nestlé, and Maersk will remain significant as the world’s biggest businesses, driving industries and economic activity, is made and the world will be more connected.
