HCLTech is going to invest up to ₹3,500 crore in AI-oriented data centres and has also announced the way it will invest in AI infrastructures in the future. And they have also said that they have cut nearly 3,300 jobs over the past three months.

The twin developments have triggered discussions across the IT sector. Although layoffs are indicative of the continued restructuring of technology companies, the large investment shows HCLTech’s confidence in the rapidly expanding AI ecosystem and the huge demand for high-performance computing.
HCLTech's AI Data Centre Vision
HCLTech CEO and Managing Director C. Vijayakumar announced at the company’s quarterly earnings conference that the company would enter the AI data centre business in order to take advantage of the growing global demand for AI computing infrastructure.
As Vijayakumar said, HCLTech will invest up to ₹3,500 crore with the capacity to scale up to 50 MW of computing capacity. This will allow for advanced AI, machine learning models, cloud computing services, and enterprise AI workloads.
The company estimates that demand for AI-related computing power will nearly triple by 2030, so this investment will be an investment in the future.
AI Boom Driving Infrastructure Expansion
Artificial intelligence has become the biggest growth engine for the world's technology industry. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure and data centres with powerful GPUs to train and run large language models.
As companies are increasingly using AI solutions, they have to have high-performance data centres globally.
HCLTech's investment puts it among Indian technology companies that want to get more into the AI infrastructure space and not just be a traditional IT service provider.
Layoffs Raise Questions
Investors have welcomed the investment, and it is also interesting because it follows the company’s statement that in the last quarter, about 3,300 employees left.
The workforce reduction can be seen as part of general trends in the IT industry where companies optimize operations, automate repetitive tasks, and shift resources to new technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.
The industry experts say AI is changing workforce requirements, which will create demand for very specialized skills and alleviate the need for some conventional jobs.
Strategic Shift for the Future
HCLTech’s decision for AI infrastructure is part of a broader strategy shift. HCLTech is not merely in software services and wants to be a big player in AI infrastructure, one of the fastest-growing segments over the next decade.
The proposed AI data centres could support enterprise customers developing AI models, cloud providers needing more computing resources, and organizations with generative AI applications.
The investment is also in alignment with India’s increasing ambition to become a global AI hub with more government and private sector investments in digital infrastructure.
Industry Outlook
With the development of artificial intelligence transforming industries around the world, investment in computing infrastructure is now as important as investment in software development.
Although the recent layoffs have sent the employees and industry observers into a panic, HCLTech's ₹3,500 crore investment is evidence of the firm’s commitment to AI infrastructure being the cornerstone of its long-term growth strategy.
If AI computing is going to grow in demand in the near future, HCLTech’s move could place it in the frame for being one of India’s major contributors to the next phase of digital transformation in the country's next stage.
