The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart after consumer complaints against the food service to improve food safety and quality. This is a continuation of the food regulator’s ongoing drive to strengthen quick-commerce platforms’ compliance as the sector grows rapidly across the country.

According to the report, the notices were issued after authorities received complaints from customers about products purchased through Swiggy Instamart. The complaints included expired or near-expiry food and product labeling and whether the food was in compliance with food safety guidelines. While the notices do not constitute guilt, the firm is required to respond to the regulator and explain the reasons for the complaints.
FSSAI, India’s top food safety regulator, is responsible for making sure food products sold in the country are safe and of good quality to the consumer and have a proper label. In the face of the expansion of online grocery and instant delivery services, the regulator has also intensified its monitoring of digital platforms to make sure consumers get safe and well-labeled foods.
Not only are fast-selling grocery and daily essential delivery services such as Swiggy Instamart becoming popular, but the convenience of these services has changed consumer shopping habits, especially in urban areas. However, the rapid pace of operations has also put greater scrutiny on inventory control, storage, product quality, and food safety issues.
These new notices will make online grocery companies more responsible for quality control at the supply chain level. These businesses are responsible for the sale of thousands of products in their dark stores and fulfillment centres, and it’s a big operational headache that expired products or damaged products don’t reach customers.
As a result of regulatory concerns, companies regularly review their internal processes, reinforce quality checks, beef up inventory monitoring systems, and train employees. Digital inventory tracking, automated expiry alerts, and regular audits are some of the measures that are being taken by quick-commerce players to ensure compliance and decrease customer complaints.
Consumer rights advocates praised the regulator for taking a proactive stance, stating that food safety should be prioritized from start to finish, regardless of where products are purchased—whether in physical stores or online. Every food business operator is legally obliged to ensure products are safe, properly stored, accurately labeled, and suitable for consumption before they are delivered to a customer.
The notices also provide warnings for consumers to check product packaging, expiry dates, and item conditions when buying products. Anyone who receives expired, damaged, or mislabeled food products should contact the customer service center on the platform and then lodge a complaint directly with the regulators.
As India’s fast-moving economy continues to grow at a dizzying pace, regulatory oversight will only be strengthened. Compliance with food safety standards will be constantly checked to ensure that convenience and health are not sacrificed for the sake of consumers’ safety.
As Swiggy Instamart is expected to respond to the notices and cooperate with the regulator, the outcome of the matter will depend on the findings of FSSAI’s review and any corrective measures taken by the company. Good food safety standards are central to India’s rapidly evolving online grocery ecosystem, and that’s why this is important.
