EPF Account Security: EPFO Lists 6 Steps to Protect Your UAN, Aadhaar, OTP and Bank Details

EPFO has issued an important warning to its members: be aware when accessing provident fund-related online services. Members of EPF are more likely to use digital platforms such as social media for account-related services, so we are telling them that fake websites, suspicious links, fraudulent messages, and emails are something to be looked out for with the same amount of caution.

EPFO Lists 6 Steps to Stay Safe Online

EPFO recently posted an advisory on X advising members to “think before you click” and take precautions while using online services. The organisation told members to verify website URLs and avoid clicking on links received through unknown or unverified sources.

The warning is especially important because fraudsters often create websites and messages that resemble legitimate government platforms. Such attempts can be used to trick users into revealing their UAN, password, Aadhaar details, PAN, bank information or one-time passwords (OTPs).

6 steps EPFO would like members to follow.

EPFO has identified six important precautions members should take in the interest of safeguarding their accounts and personal information.

1. Use only the official EPFO website

Members should access EPFO online services only through the organisation's official website. Users should avoid accessing EPF services through random links shared via SMS, email, social media or messaging platforms.

2. Avoid unverified links

EPFO has advised members not to click on unverified web links received through SMS, social media or email. Even if a message appears to come from a legitimate source, users should independently verify the website before entering any information.

Fraudsters can also use phishing links to direct users to websites that look similar to official government portals.

3. Never share sensitive information on unknown websites

Members should never enter their UAN, password, Aadhaar number, PAN, bank details or OTP on websites other than the official EPFO platform.

Sharing such information with fraudulent websites or individuals could expose members to identity theft or financial fraud.

4. Carefully check the URL

EPFO has also emphasized checking the website address before logging in. Users must look at the URL for unusual spellings, names that might not be standard domain names, or otherwise suspicious elements.

Fraudulent websites have addresses that look almost identical to legitimate websites, so the web address is important to check before entering any personal information.

5. Report suspicious activity

If an EPF member is unsure about a website, message, link or communication claiming to be from EPFO, they should report the matter to the organisation through its official channels without delay.

Members should avoid responding to suspicious requests until the legitimacy of the communication is established.

6. EPFO never asks for OTP or login credentials

One of the most important points in the advisory is that EPFO does not ask subscribers to disclose OTPs, personal information or login credentials through phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, social media, email or other communication channels.

Thus, anyone who claims to represent EPFO and asks for an OTP, password, or any other confidential information should be very careful.

Why do EPF members need to be cautious?

EPF accounts contain important personal and financial information, so they are an attractive target for cybercriminals. With more services online, members might receive messages promising to help with withdrawals, KYC updates, UAN activation, account verification or any of the other EPF services.

The message may appear genuine but may be fake to capture login information or other sensitive information.

And so members should not act in haste when they get messages regarding their EPF account. They should check on their own on the official EPFO website and verify whether any action is needed.

What to remember

For EPF members, the bottom line is simple: do not share confidential information with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly. UAN details, passwords, Aadhaar information, bank details and OTPs need to be protected carefully.

EPFO’s warning also highlights the need to check website URLs before logging in. Users should not assume that a website is genuine simply because it carries the EPFO name or logo.

By following these precautions, EPF members can avoid phishing, identity theft and financial fraud while accessing provident fund services online.
