Elon Musk is 55 today, and he has done so more than five decades in business now and has changed industries, economies, and the course of humanity.

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk’s trajectory from high school student interested in technology to today’s top 10 world-class entrepreneurs is impressive. He has founded or co-founded seven billion- and trillion-dollar companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company, each of them at the forefront of their field.
All on one hand Musk is a success now electric vehicles are mainstream. Tesla’s success revolutionized the car industry in much the same way global energy consumption has changed. The Model Y, which became the world's bestseller and the first EV that has ever crossed the $3 billion mark, is a perfect example of Musk’s vision.
In aerospace, Musk invented reusable rockets that dramatically reduced the cost of access to space. SpaceX became the first private company to dock with the International Space Station and send astronauts into orbit, bringing astronauts back to American soil. Now SpaceX is NASA’s primary commercial launch provider, a fact that speaks to Musk’s role in redefining space exploration.
His work has also had profound social and economic impacts. Musk has created 600,000 jobs through supply chains, paid out more than $100 billion in salaries, and created trillions of dollars in wealth for shareholders and employees. Neuralink, his brain-computer interface company, has given paralyzed people the ability to control computers through thought and has given them new independence and hope.
In addition, Musk has built some of the biggest and most advanced factories in the world, established the largest fast-charging network for EVs, and built one of the world’s biggest AI supercomputers. His underground transportation tunnels in Las Vegas demonstrate his passion for innovation in urban mobility.
If you do not count his early work to co-create PayPal, it is that same transformation that paved the way for today’s digital economy. All of these accomplishments are evidence of Musk’s impact on technology, energy, transportation, and finance.
Elon Musk’s 55th birthday is not only his personal accomplishment but also a mark of a career that has made sustainable energy a reality, space exploration a reality, and changed the world. The cheeky line “maybe one day Elon will actually do something” is funny, but Musk has already changed the game far more than anybody.
