Elon Musk has sparked discussion online after praising China and encouraging people to visit the country. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO spoke of China as a travel destination with modern infrastructure, cities and overall visitor experience.
Indeed, Musk has a long history of connecting with China via Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory which is a major supplier to the company’s global manufacturing facilities. He has also visited China several times over the years and met with Chinese officials and business leaders. His comments are therefore of high interest, especially as Tesla is heavily dependent on the Chinese market.
Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, also had a positive response from the conversation and shared her own experience of travel in China, too. She reported in her own words of how clean cities in China, polite people and the sense of safety she found there when she was there were her favourite places and the clean cities and people she visited. The reactions to Musk’s comments have been mixed. China is more than just a travel destination for Musk. The country is a key market and manufacturing base for Tesla, and the electric-vehicle industry has been booming in recent years. Tesla's Shanghai facility has enabled them to be more efficient and serve customers in China and other destinations.
Musk’s upbeat comments therefore take place in the context of the China and U.S. relationship. Washington and Beijing still compete in technology, manufacturing, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and semiconductors as well as other areas of technology, manufacturing, electric vehicles, and semiconductors. At the same time, American companies such as Tesla have a significant commercial interest in China.
