Bank of Baroda Faces Alleged Data Leak; Customer Information Reportedly Exposed

There are growing fears about data security on the back of news of an alleged leak of Bank of Baroda customer data, which has led to fears among customers and cybersecurity experts that sensitive personal information including Aadhaar-related information may have been leaked on the Internet.

The hacker is said to have accessed customer information and published customer-related information in social media or in the cyber sphere, in the report on social media and forums. The hacker allegedly shared a list of papers on the Internet to back up this claim and to discredit the authenticity and scope of the leaked data.

Srikanth Lakshmanan, software engineer and founder of CashlessConsumer, said the link containing the alleged leaked data was available at the time he reviewed it. Lakshmanan called the incident a cyber disaster and urged the bank to act quickly to avoid any other exposure and to protect customers affected by it.

The claims have attracted much attention but the extent of the alleged breach has not yet been independently verified. How many customers were affected or whether all that purported leaked information is true remains unclear.

If verified, the theft of customer information (identity documents or Aadhaar-related information) could increase the risk of identity theft, phishing attempts, financial fraud and other forms of cybercrime. Cybersecurity practitioners generally advise customers to be cautious, avoid clicking suspicious links, and verify any communication claiming to be from their bank.

Customers are also advised to regularly monitor their bank accounts for unusual transactions, update their passwords, enable two-factor authentication and report any suspicious activity to the bank immediately. No one should share OTPs, PINs, passwords or other confidential banking credentials with anyone who is acting as a bank representative.

At the time of writing there is no official confirmation of the scale of the data leak. The government and relevant agencies will also investigate this incident to find out the truth of the data leak and if the customer data was compromised.

As cyber threats keep increasing, incidents like this indicate that financial institutions must be very good in their cybersecurity and customer awareness must be raised.
