Paying off a bank loan is a big financial accomplishment. Whether it is a home loan, car loan, personal loan, or business loan, completing the last EMI is the end of your repayment journey. But many borrowers think that the responsibility is done at the end of the day.

As soon as your loan has been fully repaid, you should have all the necessary loan closure documents from the bank or financial institution ready for you, financial experts say. They are official proof that your loan has been closed and that the lender has nothing further to do with you.
Why is the No Objection Certificate (NOC) so important?
The most important document after repaying your loan is the No Objection Certificate (NOC), also known as a Loan Closure Certificate.
This document confirms that:
- The whole loan amount has been repaid.
- There are no pending dues or outstanding EMIs.
- The bank has no legal or financial claim against the borrower.
- The loan account has been officially closed.
If a dispute arises from the loan without the NOC, the borrowers can face difficulties in the future.
Collect Original Property Documents
If you have a home loan or a loan against property, the bank has to keep all the original property documents as security until the loan is repaid.
After loan closure, make sure you receive:
Original property title deeds, Sale deed, Registered documents, and any other papers submitted during loan processing
Before leaving the bank, verify that all documents are returned and are in good condition.
Obtain a Loan Closure Letter
Apart from the NOC, request a formal Loan Closure Letter from the bank. This is one more sign that your loan account has been closed successfully.
Let both digital and physical copies be safe, and permanent copies of the physical copies go in a secure place for future reference.
Ensure the Lien is removed
For vehicle loans, the hypothecation of the lender is usually registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
Once the loan is repaid:
- Collect Form 35 and the NOC from the bank.
- Submit them to the RTO.
- Get the hypothecation removed from your vehicle registration certificate (RC).
Likewise, for home loans, verify that the mortgage or lien has been removed from the relevant land or property records if applicable.
Check Your Credit Report
Even after receiving all documents, it is advisable to check your credit report after a few weeks.
Ensure that:
- The loan status is marked as “Closed.”
- There are no pending dues reported.
- No wrong information is shown on your credit history.
If any errors are found, contact the bank immediately and request that they update the credit bureaus.
Preserve All Documents
Store the following safely:
No Objection Certificate (NOC), Loan Closure Certificate, Final account statement, Payment receipts, Original property documents, Release deed or mortgage release documents (if applicable)
These records may be required when the property is sold or in the future for property sales, future loan applications, insurance claims, or legal verification.
