India’s dairy sector is set to achieve a major milestone with Amul set to open the world’s largest curd manufacturing plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is to be funded with a capital of ₹700 crore, which will help to up the country’s dairy processing capacity and food industry.

The new mega facility will enhance Amul's production capacity to meet the growing demand for curd and other value-added dairy products in East India. The investment is in line with the cooperative giant’s long-term strategy of expanding its manufacturing portfolio and improving supply chain efficiency in one of the country’s fastest-growing consumer markets.
The new plant will be a state-of-the-art dairy processing facility with its own production line and modern quality control for production to provide high-quality products and food safety. When it is operational it will be considered as a point of entry for fresh dairy products to be distributed across West Bengal and the neighbouring states in India.
The project will also create large employment opportunities that will be direct and indirect. For dairy farmers and milk suppliers to logistics and food processing professionals, investment is likely to benefit thousands of people in the dairy value chain.
Experts in the industry think it will strengthen India’s position as the world’s largest milk producer and support the government’s drive to expand the food processing sector. Increasing demand for packaged dairy products, changing consumer tastes and increasing urban consumption are pushing companies like Amul to invest in a bigger manufacturing base.
The Kolkata project will make local dairy farmers’ purchasing in a much bigger and stable market for milk, and thus could increase rural incomes and support sustainable dairy farming in the region.
Amul has always expanded across India through investments in milk processing, cheese, butter, ice cream, etc. The new curd manufacturing plant will be another step in the expansion of the cooperative’s growth in India and further cement its position in the Indian dairy industry.
With a budget of ₹700 crore investment and plans to create the world's biggest curd manufacturing plant, Amul is going to set the standard for dairy processing and create new business opportunities for farmers, consumers and the food-processing industry of the country. And we expect to cement India’s reputation for being a global player in dairy production and innovation.
