Adani Power is going to invest over ₹2 lakh crore in the next five years for an entire generation of 45 GW (see details). This project is the largest private sector power generation plan in India. In the future, the country is going to see an explosion in electricity demand because of the growth of industries and growth in population and consumption.

Adani Power has an installed capacity of 18.15 GW. It will increase this to 41.87 GW by FY32, and 45 GW in five years. To do so it has already secured 23.72 GW of projects that include land and major equipment orders. This investment of ₹2 lakh crore is one of the largest capital commitments by a private thermal power producer in India.
The expansion is strategically important for India’s energy security. Peak power demand is expected to increase from 250 GW today to 400 GW by 2031–32 and 700 GW by 2047. Renewable energy is growing very quickly, but thermal power is still essential for baseload power and balancing the grid. India’s government has also set a target of 100 GW of new thermal capacity by 2035, which is in line with Adani Power’s plan.
In recent years, Adani Power has been growing its power capacity in large part because of the acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd, a 600 MW plant in Vidarbha near Nagpur. In 2025, it was up from 17,550 MW to 18,150 MW and it won competitive power supply tenders in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam which has made it more competitive. Several ultra-supercritical greenfield projects have been announced which shows the ability to be efficient and sustainable.
This massive growth is a huge expansion in India’s power sector, and private players are doing things to meet long-term demand in their power sector. Not only will the investment in energy capacity increase but jobs will be created, infrastructure is better and India’s energy security will be better.
And Adani Power’s ₹2 lakh crore investment to build a 45 GW power plant is indicative of how it intends to keep its power portfolio at the centre of the Indian energy system. The company is in a position to be at the center of the power sector in India today with secured projects, government cooperation and ever increasing demand.
