In an attempt to strengthen post-service rehabilitation for Agniveers, the Sikkim government has announced a 20% reservation in Forest Guard recruitment for youth who have finished their service under the Agnipath Scheme.
The policy will also boost the employment prospects of former Agniveers and help the state to stay at the forefront of training of trained defence personnel.
The announcement is indicative of Sikkim’s focus on ensuring that military-educated youth are able to continue their participation in public service after leaving the armed forces.
The state will fill some Forest Guard vacancies in the state’s hiring as part of its efforts to help the Agniveers who have finished their four-year service.
The Agnipath Scheme, introduced by the Central Government in 2022, recruits young people into the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a fixed period of time.
Some of them are retained for long-term military service, but the rest return to civilian life, trained, disciplined, and with operational experience.
In the country, governments are establishing policies to help them gain employment for the job they are able to get after their service after a short career in the military.
Under Sikkim's new policy, eligible Agniveers will receive preference through a reservation in Forest Guard recruitment.
The Forest Guard is a job that requires physical stamina, alertness, teamwork, and the ability to cope with remote and difficult work in a challenging environment qualities in line with all that military service training.
The initiative will benefit both the state and former servicemen. Agniveers will get government jobs, but the Forest Department will be bolstered by those who have already gone through rigorous physical and leadership training.
They would be able to assist in forest conservation, wildlife protection, anti-poaching, and environmental monitoring.
The decision is also consistent with the Centre's overall aim to create career opportunities for Agniveers for the long term.
Similar employment measures have been introduced in a number of states, like reservations to police forces, prison departments, and other public services.
These policies are intended to recognise the contribution of Agniveers while making use of their skills in civilian administration.
Experts say that such interventions not only improve employment opportunities but also make more young people want to take up the Agnipath Scheme.
They also provide assurance of job opportunities after military service that we are in good hands and ensure that trained youth can still contribute to the country in a variety of roles.
With this reservation, Sikkim has taken another step towards integrating former Agniveers into the state’s development framework.
This policy reflects the government’s focus on reward for disciplined service and sustainable employment for our young veterans.
