Coinbase Chief People Officer Lawrence Brock Resigns Months After Layoffs

Just 11 weeks after the company made the announcement about major workforce cuts, around 700 jobs would be cut, Brock has resigned from his position. This comes at a time when the company’s workforce and operational methods are transforming.

We also said Brock will continue to be involved with the company during the transition period. He will provide advisory services to ensure there is a smooth handover of work and continuity of operations for the organization from one day to the next, as stated by Coinbase in March.

Brock will receive $182,500 as part of this exit agreement for providing three months of advisory services to Coinbase. This arrangement was carefully designed so Brock’s departure from the executive leadership team does not interfere with the transition and the company’s operations.

The resignation of Brock has certainly added another level of intrigue to Coinbase’s workforce strategy considering how the company has been changing in the last few years. Brock was instrumental in changing the hiring approach in 2022. Coinbase stopped any new hiring and even canceled some job offers that had already been accepted. This was a direct response to the difficulty in the cryptocurrency market, which was beginning to decline.

So, in another step of job reductions, Coinbase announced a reduction of around 700 jobs in the company, and this is only the latest. This is in keeping with the digital asset market that has experienced both rapid growth and severe downturns in such a short period of time.

Because Coinbase is still in the midst of these turbulent times, it is aggressively restructuring at this time to make its business simpler and expand its products and services. Brock is the kind of high-ranking executive one would expect to leave at this time when the company is in need to stay at the top in a fiercely competitive market.

At this point, Coinbase has yet to announce a permanent successor for the Chief People Officer position, leaving a significant void in the leadership team. Investors and employees will keep an eye on how the way Coinbase’s leadership will change going forward as the company embarks on the next step in the business of its operations. And what the company will do with its future will have an impact on its future direction and performance given the ever-changing digital asset industry.
