BitMEX Exchange to Shut Down After 11 Years; Trading Ends on September 23, 2026

Bankruptcy of cryptocurrency derivatives exchange BitMEX will end the 11 years in digital asset trading. BitMEX said that trading will stop on 23 September 2026 at 04:00 UTC due to a strategic decision by the board of HDR Global Trading Limited (BitMEX).

The board had completed a long-term strategic business review of the company, BitMEX said. BitMEX did not speak about financial and operational reasons for firing from the business but stated that it had reviewed its long-term business prospects and decided to end operations.

As part of the closure process, BitMEX has advised customers to close their trading positions, settle their contracts and withdraw their money well before the shutdown date. This is why customers should do these things as the exchange said customers are not going to get affected once trading services are closed.

BitMEX (founded 2014) has been one of the world's first cryptocurrency derivatives exchanges and has gained its fame for high-leverage Bitcoin and cryptocurrency futures trading and attracted millions of traders worldwide. At its peak, BitMEX was a significant player in the crypto derivatives market and introduced sophisticated products to retail and institutional investors.

But over the years there were also regulatory challenges for the exchange. Increasing regulatory scrutiny from financial regulators in many jurisdictions and competition from newer crypto exchanges has drastically changed digital asset trading. The cryptocurrency industry has certainly become more regulated and institutional and has an ever-growing variety of financial products available to clients.

The closure of BitMEX is one of the most important events in cryptocurrency trading history. Industry experts say BitMEX reflects the consolidation of the crypto exchange industry and only platforms with regulatory frameworks, technological advancement, and sustainable business models will survive in the future.

BitMEX, despite winding down, promises that its customers will receive customer support throughout the entire transition process. The company has advised customers to follow up with the official communications on account closure and withdrawal and settlement procedures.

Since then BitMEX has been in the news and many traders are wondering why BitMEX is so popular and has become the place to trade in crypto derivatives. As the Bitcoin exchange will soon close the door on its users, if you want to liquidate as soon as September 23, you must act now and leave before the end of September 23.
