Tata Steel, Adani Ports Among Stocks Under Brokerage Watch After Q1 Results: What Investors Need to Know

The Indian stock market is going through a phase of scrutiny and company earnings report for the first quarter of FY27 will give investors and brokers fresh information to assess earnings predictions, valuation and the company’s future prospects. Tata Steel and Adani Ports are among some stocks having attracted attention after their June quarter results.

Both companies have year-on-year growth in key financial metrics. But market reaction has shown the difference between what you think is the headline earnings growth to you and what you think it is to investors.

Tata Steel delivered a good first quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2027 with an increase in net profit of about 15% year-on-year to ₹2,318 crore and revenue of about 14%. Indian operations continued to be strength and production and deliveries were higher. There is still a lot of work in the world, in particular in Europe, and the performance as a whole is a key aspect to investors.

In conjunction with the steel major’s strong performance in Q1 were plans for heavy capital investment. Tata Steel has announced a significant investment programme to increase capacity and improve its business performance. The company’s domestic business has benefited from the high-level of infrastructure and construction activity in India but global steel prices, input costs, European operations and regulatory changes remain determinants of profitability.

Tata Steel's stock has also been weighed in differently by brokerage firms. Recent research notes have mentioned the company’s commodity situation and European operations and some brokerages have moved to more cautious ratings. For instance, Geojit BNP Paribas put Tata Steel on Hold in July, citing near-term volatility and metal stocks. JP Morgan downgraded Tata Steel to Neutral from Buy and cited an increase in regulatory costs and project risks.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone has also been in focus with its Q1 FY27 results. Net profit increased about 9% to about ₹3,620 crore and revenue rose around 18.5% to about ₹10,821 crore. EBITDA increased to about ₹6,540 crore and operating margin was around 60%. Even with the good numbers, shares fell soon after the results as market expectations can be more important than the absolute growth figures.

Adani Ports was also helped by international operations. The overseas ports business grew briskly and domestic operations rose in value as well and cargo volumes increased. Investors are therefore interested in the company’s ability to keep up its growth trajectory but also to remain disciplined with capital expenditure, debt and international operations.

It is important to note that recommendations from brokerage can vary widely and can change rapidly after quarterly results. Motilal Oswal research from Q1 FY25 earnings season, for example, listed Adani Ports and Tata Steel as the top earnings upgrades and not downgrades in that year. Adani Ports had a 4.3% FY25 earnings upgrade and Tata Steel a 3.3% improvement, with BPCL, JSW Steel and IndusInd Bank some of the biggest downgrades.

This distinction is important because the headline “downgraded” in a stock note may mean anything from a cut in earnings forecasts, a change in target price or the analyst’s formal Buy, Hold or Sell recommendation. These are not interchangeable. Investors have to go to the brokerage report and see if the change is related to earnings forecasts, valuation or investment rating.

The overall Q1 FY27 earnings season has shown that Indian companies are operating under a mixed environment. In many sectors domestic demand remains strong, but commodity prices, global economic environment, geopolitical climate and currency movements still hold sway on international companies. For Tata Steel, global steel market is of utmost importance whereas Adani Ports is closely tied to cargo volumes, trade activity and international logistics.

For investors, the latest brokerage commentary should be viewed as part of a wider assessment rather than as a Buy or Sell signal. Quarterly earnings indicate revenue growth, margins, cash flows and management expectations, but stock valuations also indicate how much positive or negative news might already be reflected in share prices.

Tata Steel and Adani Ports are now in the spotlight of investors in large-cap names (as of Q1 FY27) on their performance in spite of the fact Tata Steel is gaining some momentum in India and expanding its business and expansion plans will be of great interest in the long run, but its European business is still a topic of interest. Adani Ports is also showing strong operating performance but investors are looking at valuation, international expansion and whether earnings momentum will continue. As we approach the earnings season, it will likely remain a topic of discussion for brokerage estimates and target prices.

This article is simply for informational purposes and is not investment advice. Brokerage ratings and earnings estimates can change and investors need to be familiar with company filings and research reports before making financial decisions.
